Photographer Jonno Rattman presented his work “The Ride of Their Lives” in the Campus Center Art Gallery during lunch on November 17th, 2015. Also attending was Burkhard Bilger who wrote about the context behind the photos in his article in The New Yorker. The photo series introduces a very different world from ours in which children “prepare for the world’s most dangerous sport” (Bilger, The New Yorker) of rodeo. "Can you explain the context behind this photograph?" (Jonna Rattman) "What is a cultural difference you found most striking in the world of rodeo?" (Burkhard Bilger)

Christina Chambers ’16, Sarah Barr ’16: Spirit Week is a tradition near and dear to the hearts of EA students. This includes events such as dodge ball and clash day, and culminates with the highly anticipated all-school pep rally. It is the time of year to celebrate the athletes of Episcopal and its overwhelming sense of school unity. This year, however, because the schedule of EA/AIS sporting games was moved to earlier in the day, a number of student athletes will be unable to attend the pep rally. As Cole Testiauti ’16, puts it, “The athletes won’t have the fan base they…
During Veteran’s Day Chapel on November 11th, 2015, Edward H. Vick ’62, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at EA, first opened up the service by having three-quarters of the student body stand up. Vick explained that in 1941, about three-quarters of the school would have served in the armed forces. He then proceeded to state that serving your country “is being a part of something bigger than yourself.” Vick addressed the 1% of the nation–not the 1% that controls the lion’s share of wealth in our nation but the 1% that continues to serve our country today. “Today is…

Middle School history teacher Larry Henderson led a gospel service in Upper School Chapel this morning. “When I was growing up, church was always a time for praise and rejoicing, so we go into church on Sunday morning and whatever trouble we have in our lives, we leave them behind because we would have come out of the service better than when we walked in,” Henderson told the student body, “And that’s why we have Chapel here as well. You want to walk into Chapel and whatever problem you have, regardless of what you believe, you want to walk out…
On November 3rd, Christopher Stein ’16 spoke in Upper School Chapel about the hunger plaguing Philadelphia. Stein also spoke in Middle School Chapel on November 4th. Found below is his Chapel Speech. You can find a video recording of Stein here. Thanks, Mrs. Swanson, for the generous introduction. I also want to thank the Vestry and Reverend Squire for asking me to speak today. I want to begin by explaining my philosophy regarding the concept of responsibility. To do so, I want to use the example of “the Kitty Genovese Effect.” I learned about it in class, during 9th or 10th…

Below is an article published by the Scholium staff of 1980-81. The article recaps EA/Haverford Day in 1980, containing descriptions of the pep rally, the scores from each of the competitions, and how Episcopal players performed. That year, Episcopal had a historic clean sweep, beating Haverford in soccer, cross country, and football, securing the iconic Victory sweater for the school for another year. Alumni still remember this day nearly forty years later. Scholium Staff 1980-1981: Haverford Day 1980 was a clean sweep for EA sports teams. Varsity Soccer took a 2-0 victory which wrapped up an undefeated and untied…
Haverford Football The Haverford School football team currently holds a 7-0 record, with an OT win of 41-40 over their first League competitor, Penn Charter. While senior quarterback Kevin Carter is out for the rest of the Fords season after tearing his ACL, the school has rallied against this potential challenge. Back-up quarterback Tommy Toal, Haverford ‘17, has stepped up and shown that Haverford football is still a force to be reckoned with, playing off other start teammates Wide-Reciver Dox Aitken, ‘16, Micah Sims, ‘16, and Conner Mosebrook, ‘17. Haverford Water Polo The Fords water polo team currently holds a…
Olivia Cipperman ’19: Netflix, the world’s leading streaming company for movies and television shows, has recently released that it will be raising its subscription prices in mid-2016. Netflix announced through email earlier this year, “In order to continue adding more movies and TV shows, we are increasing our price from $7.99 to $8.99 for new members. Even though this is not going to be in affect in the near future, the topic has been raising questions about Netflix’s motives. According to Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings, the increase in price will help Netflix “to acquire and offer high quality content,” especially…
Pia Singh ’19: Along with the evolving technological world, the Episcopal Academy is keeping up with the latest online programs to make education easier for everyone. With the successful implementation of the one-to-one laptop program, many traditional aspects of school are becoming available online. One of the recent changes at the Academy has been the introduction of a new learning system, Canvas. Canvas is an online environment enabling students to access their to-do list, homework, and grades – also allowing parents to access their child’s grades. Faculty can post the homework and class materials online, relieving students from the burden of…
Phoebe Christos ’18: Furthering the mission of creating future leaders the Episcopal Academy’s Esse Quam Videri group has been an essential component in helping students improve their leadership skills and lead the Episcopal Academy community. With a fresh faced group of ten seniors in charge this year many new initiatives and ideas will set it apart from the EQV of the past. These events and programs are meant to uphold the mission of EQV. Melina Walling ‘16, EQV member, states, “The purpose of EQV is to help Episcopal students feel like they have a place in the greater community and…

Christopher Bassett ’18: After nearly forty years in the position, Reverend James Squire decided to retire at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The announcement of his decision this past summer has left many in the EA community wondering who will take his place. Squire’s leadership of the spiritual aspect of life at EA has set the standard for the chaplains that will succeed him, and the school is now on a search for an individual who can not only provide support to the religious foundation of EA, but can also match the commitment and service that has been…
