Brianna Bellinghieri ‘22 Madeleine Ott ‘22 A case that can impact students’ First Amendment rights nationwide started in rural Pennsylvania. Now, the case is in full swing with oral arguments beginning April 28. The incident in question involves Brandi Levy, a former student at public high school in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. Grace Reilly ‘19 The 2018 season for the ever-growing EA Robotics Team was its most successful ever. The varsity team, called 2234, won first place at their SBPLI Long Island Regional competition, landing them a spot in the World Competition held in Detroit. After a shaky start at their Springside Chestnut Hill Competition, 2234 team members refined their skills and prepared themselves for success in the season.    A significant difference between the Episcopal program and many other robotics teams is that the robots are built by the students with teachers Edward Mathisen ’02, Linda Lew, Diane Radov, and Chris…

Brendan McManus ’12 e-Scholium talked to several of the students who graduated last year and asked them three questions: What do you love about college? What do you miss about Episcopal? What was your favorite part of EA/Haverford/AIS Week? Katie Fell ’11 I love the freedom that I have here. It is really nice to finally not have an overwhelming busy schedule. I miss more than anything the people. I was at EA for fourteen years and the relationships I built in that time are like none other I’ve ever had. My favorite part of EA/Haverford/AIS week was definitely…

Students this January embraced an entirly different form of high school education through a two week experiencal learning environment.  Following J-Term, Scholium asked several students to review their experience. Financial Literacy I learned how to make a budget, invest, and now know the importance of the economy. For instance saving up for retirement is not something that is on the average EA student’s mind, however it is something that should not be ignored.Visiting the New York Stock Exchange showed us students something that we simply could not experience in a traditional high school educational environment. -Thomas Woodville ’17 Western…

For two weeks Episcopal teachers led classes on a variety of specialized  subjects. The focus of each course varied, including everything from  digital photography to an exchange with students from Spain.  Below are thoughts from teachers on their J-Term experience. The Canterbury School Exchange I have been hoping to do an exchange program for several years, and this J-Term finally gave us the opportunity to do it.  It was a good trip, even though it ended up having to be short, since the Canterbury kids were not in school until January 8, and we had to be back here by…

Alex Archambault ’14: The phone rings. Alex Pearson’s voice blares through the phone, another snow day. While many students are rejoicing for another day to sleep in, many teachers are dreading trying to fit yet another missed class into even less time. With AP tests approaching and the end of the year looming, many teachers have begun to worry about completing the curriculum and rumors have begun to fly about teachers taking back drop blocks and encouraging students to come in on weekends. Ironically, I was supposed to interview Dr. Delvin Dinkins, Head of Upper School, during my AP Government drop…

“My favorite thing in life right now is the fact that my grandparents can live with me, because when we first moved to Pennsylvania, they lived in Maryland. They traveled a lot, so we barely got to see them. They still travel a lot, but I know that they’re going to come back to my house, and it’s nice to know that I can spend as much time with them as possible.”

Michael Zhou ‘21 Peter Woodville ‘21 The EA/Haverford sweater is one of the most coveted objects and valued traditions at the Episcopal Academy. Currently residing just inside the front doors of the Upper School for the first time in over a decade, the half blue-and-white and half red-and-gold sweater represents the long rivalry between EA and Haverford. To some though, it represents much more. Cheryl McLauchlan, senior form dean and long-time math teacher at EA, describes what the tradition means to her: “Unlike the parents here who only have a few children at the school, I have many children here.…

Hollis DuPont ‘21 Kathleen Mark ‘21 Maiah Islam ‘21 EA/Haverford/AIS Day is one of the few opportunities during the year for Lower, Middle, and Upper schoolers to unite and show their collective school spirit. Many people believe that EA coming together as a whole for the weekend is just as important as the rivalry itself. Scholium asked students in all three divisions what they are looking forward to the most for the exciting weekend. All students agree that coming together as a school to support the athletes, to cheer from the sidelines and, of course, to beat Haverford and AIS…

Mahi-Mahi Ralhan ’26 When New Jersey residents looked up at the sky and saw what appeared to be miniature cars, they were dismayed to discover that it was not the Weasleys’ beloved Ford Anglia, but rather mysterious drones flying above their heads. These drones puzzled law enforcement and the FBI, who have not identified their source but claim that they do not threaten national security. According to CNN, “The Department of Homeland Security and White House national security spokesman John Kirby said on Thursday that many of the reported sightings are actually ‘manned aircraft’ operating lawfully.” Experts also told CNN…

Stevie Combs ’25 Addison Thomas ’27 The Philadelphia 76ers have made a major shift in their arena plans, abandoning their controversial proposal to build a $1.3 billion complex in the Market East part of Center City and signing a new contract with Comcast Spectator to construct a new stadium in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex for the 76ers and Flyers. This new decision also presents a unique opportunity: the potential for bringing a WNBA franchise to Philadelphia. In July 2022, the Sixers announced their original plan to move the team to a new complex within Center City called “76 Place…

Mary Cipperman ’21 E-cigarette use– or “vaping”– remains prevalent nationally and within the Episcopal Academy. In response, the EA administration is working to establish a new educational program for Upper School students. “I don’t see a change in vaping at EA. I think it’s actually maybe even worse,” says Mr. Michael Letts, Head of Upper School. Indeed, the use of “electronic nicotine delivery systems” (ENDS), called vapes, has increased significantly over the past year. 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data reveals that current e-cigarette use has increased by 78 percent among high school students and 48 percent among middle…
