Chris Stein ’16: Core classes that take place in library rooms exceed the space and recourses they are offered. Mandarin student Remy Williams ‘15 stated about core classes currently being taught in second floor library prep-rooms, “Even if our class is small, we are still cramped together.” In the past years, more small classes, especially those falling in the Classical Language Department and the World Language Department, have been moved to the rooms in the Annenberg Library originally intended for studying. This year, there are seven core classes. As rising Upper School enrollment threatens the efficiency of EA’s academic facilities, the…

Max Guo ’17: Broad Street Ministry, one of the many community service opportunities Episcopal Academy provides, functions as a place accepting of anyone who needs a shelter or a home where they can go and spend time in a respectable community. This year, freshman advisories were given the opportunity to volunteer at Broad Street to help the homeless. As described by Susan Swanson, Director of Community Outreach, “Broad Street Ministry is a full service outreach ministry in Philadelphia on Broad Street. We have been there partners for the last eight years. We have been pretty active, some years more than…
Tess McMullin ’18: With the end of the school year quickly approaching, there is one thing on many students’ minds- prom. Traditionally, the idea of prom constitutes girls searching for the perfect dress and booking hair appointments months ahead, leaving the boys to think of clever ways to ask their potential date to prom. One of the most common methods of “promposals” at Episcopal involves a poster board, colorful markers, and a bouquet of flowers. The poster often includes an inside joke between the askee and the the asker or a play on words involving their names, all equally funny,…

Francis Lee ’16, Claudia Teti ’16: T.J. Locke, Head of School, sent a letter home to all Episcopal parents on April 10th informing them that a teacher that previously taught at EA, Richard Smith, was being arrested for sexual crimes against children. In his letter Locke wrote, “During our review, we received reports of abuse by Smith which occurred in the late 70s and early 80s. We were devastated to learn through our review about the extent of Smith’s conduct, which we now understand involved at least eleven former Episcopal students.” While these events occurred decades ago, the release of…

Sam Niu’ 15: The proposed grade-level advisory system will not be phased in this September, but will instead remain under consideration during the 2015-2016 academic year. Reverend James Squire, Upper School Chaplain who is in charge of the current advisory system, told Scholium, “The firm decision was to take everything under advisement for another year so there’ll be no changes for next year.” Despite this postponement, strong opinions have come up both among students and faculty concerning the future of advisory. While the specifics of the proposal can be found in the e-Scholium article “Advisory Program Forum Summary: Potential Changes,”…
“I want to be a paleontologist.” “What’s the hardest thing about being a paleontologist?” “That you have to wake up super early in the morning, but I like to wake up really late.”
May 1, 2015 Dear Dr. Dinkins, Dr. Locke and Reverend Squire, We are writing to express our concern over the proposed change to our current advisory system, which is indisputably an essential part of the fabric of our school. As a student, there are many obvious benefits to having an advisor, all of which were no doubt taken into consideration when our system was first established. As stated in Mark F. Goldberg’s How to Design an Advisory System for a Secondary School, “What’s important is that an advisory system guarantees certain benefits to students in a secondary school: -Each student…
The “24” game is an arithmetic card game in which players must find a way to manipulate four integers via addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division so that the end result is 24. Each integer can only be manipulated once. Try it out! Easy: (1 1 3 13) Moderate: (7 8 8 11) Hard: (3 3 7 7)
On the night of May 1st, both Upper School instrumentalists and vocalists showcased their musical talents at the 2015 Spring Concert in the Mainstage Theater. Concert Order: Concert Band Chamber Ensemble Vocal Ensemble Chamber Orchestra (not in video) Jazz Ensemble Concert Choir
In this past week, Head of Upper School Dr. Delvin Dinkins and Reverend James Squire held three meetings in which the possibility of changes to the advisory program was discussed. All students who were available during these specific blocks were invited to attend and voice their opinions regarding the current advisory system and its future. Both Dinkins and Squire believe that advisory could potentially be a time centered on intimate large group discussions; however, there seem to be little mechanisms that can help efficiently manage these conversations in the current system. “We don’t have health nor wellness classes here,” Dinkins…
Sarah Barr ’16: Members of the Episcopal Academy’s musical The Sound of Music do-re-mi- ed themselves into the hearts of the audience Friday night. The musical, set in Austria in 1938, is a tried and true recipe for success at any theatrical level. It follows Maria Rainer (Emma Smith ‘15) and her journey from Nun, to Nanny, to the mother of the Von Trapp children and to the wife of Captain Georg Von Trapp (Will Patterson ‘16). The show opens with the Nuns of the Nonnberg Abbey who, after opening the show with their devout rendition of “Morning Hymn/Alleluia,”…
Due to the popularity of waffles on “breakfast for lunch” days, three new waffle machines were introduced to EA’s cafeteria during J-Term. Now students have the option to enjoy waffles any day they choose. This provides students with the opportunity to actually make their own waffles. Below are some ideas for creative waffle combinations, some of which can be made at school, others of which can be made at home:

Matt Freese ’17, Alexa D’Ambrosio ’17: Not only does Grace Wingfield, Head of the Upper School Math Department, teach her Pre-Calculus classes to dive into formulas and functions, but she also has begun to teach about appreciation of one’s self and others. This education on appreciation is through a new program called “Treasure What Is.” When asked to describe the program and its objectives, Wingfield explained, “‘Treasure What Is’ is a campaign we started in my Pre-Calculus classes. We are hoping it will continue to grow. It came out of a concern of mine that students in particular were only…
Alex Burman ’16, Meghan Manley ’16: Hard working is one of many traits that Julia Hondros ’16 embodies. A starter for EA’s Girl’s Lacrosse team, Julia Hondros ’16 continues to prove herself as a valuable asset to the team, on and off the field. Perfectly exemplifying the “EA Athlete”, Julia Hondros ’16 leads through hard work, leadership, and respect. Coach Josie Ferri, Head lacrosse coach for EA Girl’s Lacrosse, looks back on Week 1 of last year’s lacrosse season, “Our team slogan last year was “ALL IN” and we gave out bracelets weekly to players who the coaches thought demonstrated…
