John Durovsik ’12, Mimi McCann ’13 Enduring the North Carolina six day Outward Bound course is a rite of passage for Upper School students in the Episcopal Community. Having just returned from the trip, we asked the fearless foresters and brave backpackers of the class of 2015 for some of their most memorable experiences. Amanda Paolino: It was raining heavily one day and we had to go into a lightning drill, which is when we all have to sit on our packs so we are not touching the ground. We were under all these trees in the pouring rain…
Tennis: Sophmore Caroline O’Rourke, the number one singles player, is a tremendous competitor and athlete, who is a leader by example. An All Inter-Ac and All Main Line athlete last year, she is mentally tough and never gives up, despite the score or situation. Boys Cross Country: Pat Sernyak, senior and captain, shows promise as one of the team’s top runners, after recovering from a foot injury last season. He has been in the top eight runners on the team since freshman year, competing at Inter-Ac Championships, EA/Haverford Day races, and State Championships. Sernyak has been training all summer, and…
Katie Howlin ’12 Todd Fairlie, the newly appointed head football coach, has worked to instill a new tradition in the EA football team. He implemented a sleepover during pre-season’s grueling two-a-days in order to bring the team together and better prepare the athletes for the upcoming season. The tough training regimen included a football focused morning, noon, and night, with two practices a day, film sessions, meetings and chalk talks, as well as conditioning and lifting. Coach Fairlie remarks that the team “really gelled and got along. They were pushed out of their comfort zone, and had to concentrate on…
Michele Herzog ’12, Julia Fay ’13 Think summer concerts are over? Think again. Popped Music Festival, hosted by Radio 104.5, comes to Philadelphia on September 23rd and 24th as one of the last outdoor festivals of the season. The bands and comedians will perform in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, located in South Philadelphia and just off of I-95. FDR Park lays claim to a world famous skate park and expanses of wide green lawns on which the festival will take place. With sponsors such as Radio 104.5, Philadelphia City Paper and ‘Stache Media, more than twenty artists will perform between…
Matthew Vegari ’13 We run across the beautifully colored fields with tiny pieces of rubber kicking up behind us, enjoying the ease of running across a perfectly flat surface, while also remaining unaware of the potential dangers that arise from artificial turf. Though they look perfectly green and inviting, there are certain risks that are heightened by the use of turf fields, including heat stroke, infection, and the emission of harmful fumes. Episcopal currently houses two turf fields for football and field hockey, as well as a turf playground in the Lower School. If it does not rain for several…
Collin Wright ’12 Dear Episcopal Academy Community, The Vestry has been working very hard since last year, and through the summer, to be prepared for the Chapel services in the 2011-2012 school year. We are excited about the new theme, a quote from Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The Vestry hopes that this theme will promote faith-based speeches and discussions about what drives us to make a difference. Whether in the classroom, community or the world, we all can be an example for what we believe in. We hope that this year’s chapels will…
Jill Barton ’12, Kristin Greenwood ’12 The Class of 2015 features fifty-one new freshmen, accounting for forty percent of the III Form, an unprecedented amount of new students. According to the online statement by the Admissions Department, there are typically forty openings for enrolling freshman, eleven fewer than those newly enrolled this year. Freshman Form Dean Cheryl McLauchlan attributes this record amount of new students to the reduced numbers of Episcopal’s returning eighth graders. Although there is speculation that the large number of new incoming freshman reflects Episcopal’s goal to increase grade sizes, McLauchlan dispersed this rumor: “After the move…
Gracey Austin ’12, Lyssa Freese ’12 Scholium sat down with the co-presidents of student council, Jackie Blickman ’12 and Mohammed Toure ’12, for a photo shoot and discussion about the upcoming year, co-running student council, and their efforts to make student council more efficient. Scholium: Everyone knows who the student council co-presidents are, but many are unaware of the actual responsibilities that you carry. Could you enlighten the student body? Mohammed: As co-presidents of student council we usually have responsibility for organizing big school events like dances, spirit week and overseeing the coordination of all the activities of the other…
