After his Oscar win, Charlie Kaufman was approached by sony pictures to create them a horror movie, and thus sprang Synecdoche: New York. A film that is not scary in a conventional sense, but rather in a sense of having a dream that no matter how hard you try, cannot be completed. This however is just my interpretation. This is a film that is meant to be interpreted differently by all those who view it; some may view this film as one about insanity, and others may see nothing in it at all. The film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as…

The football team came away with a thrilling victory tonight over a strong Lawrenceville squad. The contest was tight and hard-fought throughout, with neither team taking a lead more than a touchdown. It began with a huge, 80 yard kickoff-return by Episcopal Sophmore CJ McAnally, but Lawrenceville drove right back down the field, tying the game up at 7. It was clear, from that point on it was going to be a dog-fight. When it came down to crunch time, with the teams deadlocked at 28 apiece, Episcopal had the edge. Zahir Caldwell began the late game push with an…

Michael Nickolas Fantasy football lineups can be tough to orchestrate. Players underperform, get hurt, or have byes. It’s all one big circus act. Going into this weekend, I see two players that are looking to have big weeks that are probably available through the waiver wire. Owned in just 14.8% of all ESPN leagues, WR Brian Quick could be a great pick up for this week. Going against the Eagles and what is a suspect secondary, I see Quick breaking out a big play here and there and getting you no less than 10 points. Quick is averaging roughly 9…

If anyone told me LeSean McCoy would have 70 carries for 192 yards and 1 touchdown through 4 games, I would call you crazy. Insane. Yet, here we stand. The Eagles’ run game this year has been abysmal, pathetic even. Through 4 games, we’ve seen McCoy run side to side only to gain 2 yards consistently. His inability to get down field is majorly due to the lack of a healthy offensive line but more importantly, the play calling. Chip Kelly has been predictable with his offensive play calls which I consider to be seriously detrimental to Shady’s run game.…

Hemp-Hop is run by Jack Hemphill and Max Hopton, childhood friends who were bullied into writing it by Jake Shuman, the e-Scholium head. Here is a short introduction of the two of them and their blog. Porpoise of the Blog- This blog’s main purpose will be to discuss interesting subjects and topics and sometimes even teach people a few things they may not know. For the most part we’ll write fairly comical and laid-back columns and we hope to entertain readers to the point where they will be discussing topics in the comments and telling us what they what they…

Wilson Smerconish ’16: A new space for the school store and renovations to the computer lab were major projects undertaken at EA this summer. The Kutteh School Store will now be located across the hall from the library, in the former location of the Hollinger Faculty Commons. The relocation will increase the options given to students, faculty and families, as the space is now much larger than that of the former store. In an email to the faculty, Head of School TJ Locke stated, “When we evaluated the use of both spaces, we found that the school store lacked the space…

Instead of starting classes this September as a junior, Shreya Dalal ‘17 is taking a gap year in order to follow her dream of representing India in national and international skating competitions. Francis Lee ’16, Isabella Sanchez ’16: Many student-athletes finished their summers by traveling with their sports teams as a part of preseason this year. Whether it was across the country or abroad, more teams than ever packed suitcases and left EA’s campus. However, some students have raised questions about the necessity of such trips. Meredith Warchol ‘15 points out, “I think that in some ways it’s a fun way to mix up preseason and get more experience. But in other instances, what is the difference between practicing at EA and practicing in a different state, other than playing teams out…

Cole Testaiuti ’16: In order to develop Episcopal’s fall athletic teams, some coaches had the opportunity to kick off the year by traveling. They left to play teams and courses they had never seen before. These EA teams consisted of girl’s soccer, boy’s soccer, field hockey, boy’s golf, and girl’s water polo. Now that the trips are finished and seasons continue at school, the captains were more than happy to share their experiences with us. From girls soccer, Maria Kilcullen ’15 said, “The trip to DC allowed the group of seven seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen to…

Alexa D’Ambrosio ’17, Matt Freese ’17: Colds, lack of sleep, allergies, the flu, and viruses are merely a few of the concerns pending on Nurse Anne Ravreby’s mind for the upcoming school year. In the fall, students will struggle with getting an inadequate amount of rest since they “are used to sleeping in later.” Ravreby explained that during the fall and spring, “Everyone will be complaining about seasonal allergies.” The bitter cold, snow, and wind during the months of December, January, and February will cause the most sickness of the year. During these months, the flu poses a serious threat to…
