Leo Peng ’15, Waylon Jin ’15: A committee has recently been established to reevaluate Episcopal’s current academic schedule, which has been in use for numerous years. The committee will consider the academic priorities of all three divisions of the Episcopal Academy: Lower, Middle and Upper School. According to Dr. Cathy Hall, the Assistant Head of School, there are no major problems with the current schedule; however, the faculty is fully aware of the overwhelming workload some students experience. “We haven’t looked at our schedule comprehensively over ten years,” said Hall. “This is a healthy opportunity to step back and study…

Sam Niu ’15: After years of a pump-and-haul sewage system, Episcopal Academy is now in the process of building an underground pipeline connecting EA to the township’s public system. This project began with the planning of the new campus in 2005, and  since that time has been through numerous iterations and approvals at local and state levels. Currently, Episcopal has “two above ground tanks, which hold nearly 30,000 gallons in capacity and as those tanks [get]…full, trucks come and haul the waste off to one of their disposal facilities…The trucks come as frequently as three times a day,” said Mark…

Sam Niu ’15: Community Connections, a progtram that strives to connect the Upper, Middle and Lower Schools, will resume this year under the leadership of Upper School History teacher Lynn Hay. The program’s goal is to “foster relationships between older and younger students,” and this year will be “picking up where it left off” says Hay. Community Connections seeks to “enhance a sense of community among the three units and has been around for many years,” recalled Hay. Hay said, “In the 1990’s it was called Big Brother/Sister – Little Brother/Sister and its purpose was just to provide an older…

Maddie Hughes ’16:  The Episcopal Academy’s Upper School administration has significantly reduced the sizes of freshman advisories this year in order to help them become more adjusted. Instead of the usual ten to twelve students occupying an advisory, there are now only three or four students per advisor. Dr. Delvin Dinkins, Head of Upper School, stated the new freshman advisory system “makes sense.” He says, “That we noticed that some freshmen needed additional attention during the transition period,” Michael Letts, V Form Dean, agreed, adding, “The smaller advisories are more conducive to the freshmen, and it helps them become more…

Tradition is engrained in the very nature of our school. However, circumstances occasionally arise that alter the commonalities we have come to know and love. For years, one of the most beloved traditions at Episcopal has been the annual EA/Haverford/AIS weekend. However, this year we will regrettably fail to experience the event as we have in the past. November 7th-8th of 2014 will mark the prime time for competition between the Churchmen, the Owls, and the Fords. Yet, this weekend will also be characterized by hours of stressful standardized testing, as Saturday, November 8th is a nation wide SAT date.…

“A homicidal car tire, discovering it has destructive psionic power, sets its sights on a desert town once a mysterious woman becomes its obsession.” This is the IMDB plot synopsis of Rubber, the Quentin Dupieux film that is almost unmatched in weirdness. It stars a series of unknowns, and a tire. A tire that through reasons explained in the film comes to life, and goes on a killing spree in search of a woman. That’s the real plot. I’m not kidding you in the slightest. Normally I would explain to you the symbolism of the tire, and what its weirdness…

After pausing the film to go to the bathroom, upon my return I that my television was displaying a beautifully painted picture, not a movie. Every frame of this film is more beautiful than the last, and has the qualities of a painting. The films beauty does not end at the picture itself, but continues into the way director Terrance Malick handles the multitude of films that are present throughout, that deal with life, death, after life, and the way of grace vs. nature. This Oscar nominated film is about a family living in 1960’s Texas. A mother, who represents…

Mark Sanchez led the Eagles to victory today. Let that sink in. “Butt fumble”, “good for nothing”, Mark Sanchez just beat the Texans. He seemed calm, collected, and much sharper than Foles has been all year. Sure, he threw 2 interceptions, but one went directly off of Josh Huff’s hands. It’s easy to see how the Eagles won and here’s why. In a pass happy offense, the Eagles did something astounding today. They ran the ball more than they passed. LeSean McCoy finished with 117 yards and Chris Polk was substituted in for the short yardage plays and finished…

Hopton 1. Coke Seen as America’s soda, Coca Cola is enjoyed all over the world for its unique taste and acid-fueled destruction of most stomachs. I have this at number one because I can’t imagine an American pizza party without Coke. 2. Pepsi Coke’s little brother that has an inferiority complex. It’s not that Pepsi’s bad. Theres just something about it that doesn’t quite make it….. well, Coke. 3. Dr. Pepper Again this is a soda that does something unique from other sodas and deserves a spot on my list. Its flavoring is just unique enough from Coke’s…

Is film therapeutic? Or is it just a waste of time? Is it therapeutic for only the viewer, or is it for the filmmaker as well? These questions are at the forefront of Waltz with Bashir, Ari Folman’s animated documentary capturing his experience in the Lebanon war. Or so he thinks so. The director plays himself as he tried to uncover what happened in the war, because he can’t remember it. This takes him on a therapeutic journey interviewing people about the war, the genocide, and the invasion that came with it. Ari Folman came out and said making this…

I always love looking at old tapes of football games. As a contrast to today’s pass friendly game, I love seeing the hard-nosed plays and the runs up the gut. I see players with heart, passion, and determination. Now, I watch the Eagles and I don’t really see any resemblance of what football once was. Sure, times have changed and football now is vastly different than it once was but there are times when I wish Chip Kelly looked at the old footage and took notes. The Eagles and Cardinals game can be characterized as one that simply “got…

Looking at this years most recent oscar nominees, they all seem to share a similar theme: none of them are as good as Short Term 12. It’s a low budget film that contains no expensive special effects, sets made in a warehouse, or fancy costumes. It’s a film that simply relies on its characters and the conversations among them to entertain you. Short Term 12 has the simplest plot of any movie talked yet on this blog. It follows the kids and faculty of a home for underprivileged children. That’s it. However the people that this film surrounds are some…

Nothing bothers me more than when a film sacrifices entertainment for symbolism and themes. I hate when the director thinks what he has to say is more important than the entertainment of his film, which at the end of the day is what a film has to be. However The Holy Mountain gets a pass on this. It is a film that works it’s symbolism and imagery into the plot better than any film I have ever seen. The main character in the film serves to tell the other charters, and essentially us what the symbolism is. However he does…

There are police in other countries, but they’re not taking care of our country, where we live.” If you had control, what would you do? “Try to make things better for people. Try to get people to live together, and stop all this hatred, and killing. That doesn’t make sense. So…

Last week’s sleeper picks were a big success as Kelce went for 7 points and Quick ended up with 20. Knowing your waiver wire pays dividends when your big players have bye weeks and this week I have two more sleepers that will help your team. The Chargers’ running backs have had the worst luck. With Danny Woodhead out for the season, Ryan Mathews out 4-5 weeks, and Donald Brown questionable with a concussion, the team has been forced to go to the fourth option. Luckily for the Chargers, he was electric last week. In this past week, Branden…
