Jessica Bai ’16, Sarah Barr ’16: A new Episcopal Academy Upper School music requirement will be introduced to all students after President’s Day Weekend in mid-February. In an attempt to increase the appreciation of arts at EA, James Erwin, Director of the Music Department, drafted an proposal in which advisories must sing in Chapel to replace the Upper School Vocal Ensemble. “I came up with this great idea that we thought would really help encourage singing in the Chapel,” Erwin commented. “I was inspired by seeing the lunch cleanup during J-Term since the tables weren’t getting cleaned up because of…

Samuel Niu ’15, Wilson Smerconish ’16: In an attempt to relieve the entire community of congestion in the dining hall serving line, EA will be holding its first ever Elimination Exams. These exams, which are to be administered only in the Upper School, will determine which students will be offered a position of enrollment for the next school year. Head of School Dr. T.J. Locke voiced his support, explaining his reasoning behind these exams. “Because of the overcrowding in the lunch room and the increased demand for J-Term, we are going to be giving all students a test and then…

Claudia Teti ’16, Christina Chambers ’16: Michael Field Letts, V Form Dean, has recently received the highly prestigious 2015 Strictest Form Dean Award from the American Form Dean Association. Each year, the AFDA chooses one high school dean from a nationwide pool of over 100,000 applicants as the recipient of the Strictest Form Dean award. The criteria for this esteemed accolade includes implementing a large number of rules judged unfair by multiple students, countless angry emails, and “lounge-silencing” yelling. “Letts initially caught our attention when he sent the first email regarding a messy lounge area last March,” said Carl Rogers,…

Paul Thomas Anderson seems to have two types of films. The fun, show-off character study that is fast paced and oozes energy. His past three films, have been slow-paced, dark, and philosophic character studies. The only similarity between the two is the mere-fact that they share the genre that PTA has mastered, character studies. Every character in his films feel fully realized. A true breathing, living human-being that I could find anywhere. The characters in The Master seem to be polar opposites, but they both wish to be the other. The first one Lancaster Dodd, is the leader of a…

With the New England Patriots winning Super Bowl XLIX, the 2014-2015 NFL season has come to a close. In my opinion, Super Bowl XLIX did not disappoint. The Patriots won 28-24 over the Seattle Seahawks and it was a close game all the way to the end. The teams seemed evenly matched. I picked the Patriots to win before the game started, but the Seahawks should have won this game. I believe the Seahawks lost the game for themselves. On their final offensive play of the game, the Seahawks decided to throw the ball from the one-yard line with 27 seconds left.…

The Dirties is one of the most clever film concepts I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Its a film about a two filmmakers who begins to make a film about death, and murder. This film suddenly turns into his reality as we see one of the characters decent into madness. Meanwhile the film we are watching is a film in the “found-footage” vein of paranormal activity. But where many of those films often use the tactic in order to save money, or to add an often unreal sense of reality to their film to make it seem as…

In light of the recent November Scholium issue, we have received the following letter to the editor. Dear Editor, It’s with shock and disbelief that I read the article “Underused iPads prove themselves unnecessary” which I consider to be a collection of lies, misconstrued facts, out of context quotes and a complete mockery of the reality. On behalf of the World Language Department, not Modern as the editors should have known, I want to publicly state that we are deeply grateful to the EAPA for the generous donation that allowed us to purchase 48 iPads, not 50 as stated. During an…

I needed to take a shower after watching this film. Its characters are the lowest low that this earth has to provide. They engage in rape, drugs, violence, and crime in order to entertain themselves and because they have nothing else going for them, this is all they live for. Now a little disclaimer before this review, it’s going to be a rather laid back, and more of a spoiler filled rant/praise of this film, so go grab some popcorn, maybe a soda pop or a vitamin water, whatever tickles your fancy and lets discuss Kids. So basically Harmony Koire…

I’ve recommended Spring Breakers to a lot of people. A majority end up watching it, assuming that Selena Gomez in a bikini equals a good movie. While it certainly doesn’t hurt, Harmony Korine’s latest feature is a film that far exceeds the other films Selena Gomez. Gomez, as well as a few other former child stars play college students that want nothing more than to join the rest of their classmates on Spring Break. When they can’t acquire enough funds to do so, they resort to crime which follows them to spring break. There they meet, criminal/rapper Alien, played by…

Animated films that aren’t made for children have never done it for me. They often come off as one that should have been live action, and often never fully deliver. That’s why I was worried going into Richard Linklater’s Waking Life, a film that was shot and later turned into an animated one in post production. However while watching it, you see that the animation serves a distinct purpose and the film would not be quite the same without. Waking Life is about a nameless character going through his dreams discussing with other characters about their life experience, philosophy on…
