Phillip Humann ’16, Wilson Smerconish ’16: Rumors about shrinking cafeteria food portions and rising prices have been escalating since school began in September. While it is unclear how these rumors began, research shows that they are false. While it is true that some food prices have been rising in recent months, the food portion size has not been reduced. The reason for increasing prices has nothing to do with Episcopal’s selection of foods or portion sizes, rather it has to do with recent government regulations to promote healthier cafeteria options for students nationwide. John Familetti, Director of Dining Services, helped…

Sam Niu ’15: Just as the Mainline Takeover Project was an avenue for drugs into the EA community, online markets, such as the Silk Road, also provide easy access to drugs and other illicit materials. The federal government,  however, delivered a significant blow to these types of sites by recently winning the conviction of Silk Road creator Ross William Ulbricht. A Manhattan jury deemed Ulbricht, known as Dread Pirate Roberts, guilty of seven federal charges on February 4, 2015. One of these charges carries a minimum of 20 years in prison, with his total sentence potentially being life. The Silk…

Phoebe Christos ’18: One-to-One, a program that provides students with a personal laptop, is in the process of expanding to the Upper School. Dr. Catherine Hall, Assistant Head of School and Former Director of Technology, said, “We want the laptops to be tools that the students and faculties can actually use to generate different ways of teaching and learning.” After many years of research and discussion about its benefits and drawbacks, the One-to-One program was initiated at the Episcopal Academy in 2012. “One-to-One programs have been around for a very long time…Since laptops have become affordable, schools around the country…

Abhay Malik ’17, Ed Zhao ’17: EA’s Development Robotics team, known as the FIRST Robotics Team 2095, and Leslie Trimble, Upper School Science teacher, have joined Episcopal’s partnership with ACLAMO this winter. Trimble, with several students from the Winter Wellness program, teaches the students at ACLAMO about biology, specifically botany, while the Robotics team teaches robotics. The goal of both groups is to give these children an opportunity to learn and do something that they might not otherwise be able to do. The mission of the First Robotics Competition, the competition in which EA’s Robotics team competes, is to “inspire…

Isabella Sanchez ’16: The EA Speakers Series’ stated intention is “to bring a diverse, talented group of speakers to campus to introduce ideas, provoke thought, and encourage discourse across a range of topics and perspectives.” Many students have been left, however, asking “what diversity?” Most speakers have been white men. Dr. Catherine Hall, Assistant Head of School, acknowledged this concern, emphasizing that “this year was the most challenging in this aspect because it was being constructed late, it made it much trickier to be able to take that step back and really make sure we hit all forms of diversity…

Abby Hogan ’18: The EA Speaker Series next event will be a March 5 symposium entitled “Equity and Access: A Symposium on Education” in the competition gym. The event will focus on the broadening of access to education and educational resources, both in our area and around the country. According to Dr. Catherine Hall, Episcopal Academy Assistant Head of School, “The idea is to approach different perspectives on educational access and equity.” The event will be formatted like a panel, with a moderator, a group of five panelists, and an audience. “The idea was to bring in a handful of…

If that title sounds familiar, it is. It was the critical room in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, and Room 237 the film explores everything that film has to offer. While this films purpose is to explore everything I naturally do in these reviews, but some of the theories this film creates are mind blowing. Without spoiling much, just imagine the carpet Danny plays on as a rocket launch pad, and he travels 237.000 miles to room 237 in order to land his Apollo 11 sweater on the moon. It is so complex and mind-bending you will immediately want to watch…

Francis Lee ’16, Isabella Sanchez ’16: After much deliberation, EA has decided to abandon its Episcopalian foundation and re-root its faith in the Greek gods. This decision was made after deciding that the Greek faith was the best way for EA to “Challenge and nurture mind, body and spirit,” while “inspiring boys and girls to lead lives of purpose, faith, and integrity.” Changes will be implemented before the end of this school year. One of the most essential changes to be seen will be the Stripes. No longer will they be self-control, faith, honesty, courtesy, kindness, generosity, gratitude, courage, respect,…

Matt Freese ’17: Despite the rigorous academic schedule, accomplished drama club, and renowned athletic program, Episcopal Academy is best known for its chicken patties. This year, however, it is no secret that EA’s cafeteria is striving to offer healthier options with a salad bar and fresh sandwich station. To further improve upon the healthiness of the kitchen, the Cafeteria staff has now decided to alter one slight thing about its menu: the chicken. Instead of being made of chicken, the famous chicken patties will now be made of 100% fresh tofu beginning on February 9th. Tofu looks very similar to…

Alexa D’Ambrosio ’17: Spring break of 2015 will be cancelled to make up for the many snow days from the previous school year. This administrative decision was made because in the 2013-2014 school year, students lost valuable school time due to eight snow days, plus delayed openings. Dr. Delvin Dinkins, Head of the Upper School explained, “I believe in the concept of delayed gratification, and so by waiting a full year to make up the days, I think students will benefit more than if we had made them up last year. I am excited that we have to make them…
