Maggie Dugery ‘23 Sarah Kotapka ‘23 College Board statistics indicate that around 775,000 students took the AP Literature and AP Language exams in 2021. In recent years, Episcopal students are typically not among those taking the exams. Although Episcopal Academy features a wide-ranging, challenging curriculum that offers regular, honors, and AP classes in almost every subject, AP Literature (AP Lit) and AP Language (AP Lang) are two courses that EA notably does not offer. While these courses are a part of many high schools’ curricula across the country, they have never been taught at EA. In fact, up until five…

Aru Venugopalan ’24 Jason Ni ’23 Andrew McMeekin ‘22 is known for his hard work and dedication both on and off the field. McMeekin explains how he began lacrosse by remarking, “I saw all the neighborhood kids were playing and I saw the older EA kids playing too. This led me to have great interest in lacrosse, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made.” He continues, “I started playing lacrosse in 4th grade. I had been playing baseball, but wanted to try something new. I went to my first lacrosse tryout for the Marple…
Thought: Should celebrities share their personal lives, opinions, and feuds on social media? Nic Staley: Imagine you and your friend are having a debate and things end badly. You two just cannot see eye to eye, and resentment starts to build. Now, imagine that your friend goes to social media and posts twenty tweets claiming that you are an awful and abhorrent person. For regular people, that kind of behavior would be considered odd, and your friend would receive backlash from the community. This is why I am confused that people think it’s acceptable for celebrities to slander each other…
Episcopal strives to nurture students in mind, body, and spirit so as to prepare them for their futures in what is often referred to as “the real world.” Teachers and parents are known to berate students with comments of “It won’t be like this once you get to college” and “You’ll be in for a rude awakening when you find out how the real world works.” Episcopal is commonly denoted as a “bubble” for privileged students. In order to educate its students more comprehensively and introduce them to more of the “real world,” it is important that EA not only…

Fiona Riley ‘22 | Kassidy Kryukov ‘24 The Fashion Club was created this year to educate community members on the history and importance of using clothing as a form of self expression. Leaders Bridget Murphy ‘25, Delaney Welsh ‘24, Kate Lamb ‘24, Lily Hendrickson ‘24, and Tory Lynn ‘25 spent the majority of meetings in the first semester discussing modern trends and designers, as well as providing opportunities for students to hands-on learn about sewing. When asked about the inspiration for the club, Lamb states, “We are all incredibly passionate about fashion and think it needs to be included as…

Elizabeth Hershey ’25 In recent years the syllabus for 2D Design classes has expanded to include iPads. Using the app Procreate, students have worked to create precise and creative digital artwork. The iPads used are Apple’s newest model of iPad Pro’s. They come equipped with Gen-two Pencils that are used to draw like a normal pencil. The precision and simplicity of the technology is what has made its integration into art classes so seamless. William Forbes, the Technical Service Coordinator, says “It’s a much more accurate depiction of what your pencil is doing.” Other applications in the past have given…

Colin Schlitt ‘24 | Connor Shanahan ‘24 Since the arrival of the Omicron variant, the amount of COVID-19 cases within the Upper School has risen by 264% from September to December. At the beginning of the academic year, only six Upper School students had contracted COVID-19, but in January alone, EA has recorded over fifty-one positive cases in the Upper School. This latest surge has led to updated policy changes for EA’s COVID-19 guidelines, including stricter punishments for wearing masks improperly, a five-day quarantine period, and a negative test for close-contacts or positive test results, and a further enforcement of…
Daniel Demessie ‘24 | Brendan Schlitt ‘24 May Term has finally returned to EA after two years of long awaited anticipation. Many students will be participating in this unique experience for the first time, as only the Class of 2022 has had the opportunity to participate in May Term due to the lasting effects of COVID-19. Ryan Klein, Director of May Term and US Math teacher, states, “I’m excited to get back to it. It’s been two years since we had one, so it’s always fun to end the year on that note and give the kids a different experience…

Gray Collins ‘25 | Theo Engelman ‘25 Horizons at EA has partnered with a new partner school, the Overbrook Educational Center (OEC), to increase the program’s reach and impact. The selection process for the new partner school involved the consideration of many different factors. According to their website, Horizons is a nationwide nonprofit organization aimed at reducing the disparity in education between underserved communities and those with ample resources. Horizons has found that two-thirds of the educational gap can be attributed to the learning loss that occurs in the summertime. Horizons at EA is one of many affiliates of this…
Kat Barber ‘23 | Elizabeth Boruff ‘23 Plans for replacing the current Lower School playground with a new one are being finalized, and EA administration plans to begin construction soon. The development of the new playground’s design has been a collaborative effort, bringing together ideas from faculty, architects, parents, and even students. Conversations about a new playground began a couple of years ago, primarily because the current playground has numerous safety concerns. Dr. Terrance Malone, Head of Lower School, describes the problem with the existing playground, explaining that while “the playground has a plexi-wood Trex layer that doesn’t really rot…
Xinxin Fang ‘24 The rapid spread of the Omicron Covid Variant and data demonstrating the ineffectiveness of vaccines over time has health experts advocating for the public to get the vaccine booster, which as of now is approved for people ages 12 and up. Because students in Episcopal’s Middle and Upper Schools are eligible for booster shots, the EA masking policy could potentially change in the near future, moving towards a “mask-optional protocol if the case counts lighten up and transmission decreases,” according to Laura Hurst, Director of Health Services at EA. In August, a study published by the Centers…
Rick Chen ‘24 This year has proven to be one of the most competitive years in admissions history at EA. According to the Admissions office, by late January, the Middle School’s admit rate was between 20% and 30%, and the Upper School’s admit rate was at about 32%. In a normal year, the admit rate is at around 40% in both the Middle and Upper School. These abnormally low rates are a result of more applications without increasing the number of spots to fill. Admissions decisions for the 2022-23 school year have recently been finalized. Carolyn Totherow, Interim Director of…
Arjun Bhamra ‘22 The Germination Project (GP) has been a hot topic in the sophomore class as many students have recently been gathering recommendations and writing essays in order to apply for it. However, many people in the community are unfamiliar with what the program really achieves and the qualifications necessary to get in Nik Walling ‘22, GP fellow, explains that the application process “consists of a personal essay that you write, and to my knowledge, there’s not a strict word requirement on that. After that personal essay, if you pass that first round, you get called up for an…
