Connor Shanahan ‘24 | Gautam Ketkar ‘24 Sage Dining Services has begun to incorporate meals that celebrate global holidays and big community events into EA’s meal plan. Katie Vigna, the Head of Sage Dining at EA, commented on the process behind these special meals, saying,“There’s food holiday calendars and we kind of follow that, or if we hear anyone at the school talking about something then we kind of listen to them as well, so it is a combination of our ideas and the EA community.” Sage uses the National Food Calendar, which celebrates a variety of meals and beverages,…
Aryav Dhar ‘24 EA hosted their very own in-person Model UN conference on campus this year instead of traveling to Philadelphia or doing an online conference like they did in previous years. Led by David Mercante, Upper School History Teacher, the conference was held on Friday, February 25th and Saturday, February 26th. A committee of students helped to lead the conference. Mercante explains, “The team is made up of seven students. Typically we have five seniors and two juniors on the leadership team. This year, our seniors are Alec Riley, Arjun Bhamra, Emmie O’Neil, Josh Huang, and Maddie Dennis. Our…
Bridget Murphy ‘25 | Molly Ott ‘25 A re-evaluation of the EA dress code is currently underway, with a committee of students, faculty, and parents offering their commentary and thoughts. At this time, nothing has been finalized, and new opinions are still being discussed. The committee plans to finalize proposals and present them to the community by the end of this school year. Committee meetings began with conversations about major disputes in the dress code, and the committee split itself into sub-committees accordingly. Michael Letts, Head of Upper School, states, “We zeroed in on four themes. One is the kilt.…

Gray Collins ‘25 | Theo Engelman ‘25 Advanced Placement Classes have long been a staple at EA, and currently more than 20 AP courses are offered each year with many dozens of students attending these classes. Recently however, an AP committee has been scrutinizing whether or not to keep these classes at the school. Some independent schools in the area like Haverford and Baldwin have stopped their AP programs, while others such as Germantown Academy still have a strong array of AP classes. The AP Committee consists of teachers and faculty members. Matthew Memmo, Computer Science Department Chair and member…

Elizabeth Boruff ‘23 | Kat Barber ‘23 The College Board officially announced in January that the SAT is being altered to adapt to the diverse needs of students and for the test to be “easier to take, easier to give, and more relevant,” according to Priscilla Rodriguez, Vice President of College Readiness Assessments at the College Board. Becoming available in 2024, the new SAT will be shorter, digital, and many of the individual sections will be different. The current version of the SAT has not been changed since 2010 and is a completely standardized, in-person exam, lasting approximately three hours…
Ishani Khanna ‘25 The EA Dance Team deserves the same recognition and the same opportunities to compete, perform, and share their achievements as any other varsity sport. By denying skilled and accomplished dancers the opportunity to earn varsity letters, EA disserves its students and harms its reputation. Dance is currently offered as a winter sport at EA, but there is no varsity distinction. Although team members practice during sports blocks and even hold a performance, they cannot receive the same deserved recognition as other EA athletes. Though it counts as a sport, in practice, dance is treated as an art.…

Alyssa Sterner ‘24 March is Women’s History Month, a time spent recognizing female struggles and accomplishments, as well as reflecting on the evolution and progress society has made in terms of taking strides to promote and embrace gender equality. The 2022 Women’s History Month theme is “Providing Healing and Promoting Hope.” This is in reference to womens’ role as healers throughout history, and hope for the potential improvements in future generations. Given Episcopal’s history of initially being an all-boys school, Women’s History Month offers an avenue for the community to not only recognize the development of women in society, but…
Riley Thibodeau ‘23 Episcopal students’ learning experience has become increasingly dependent upon laptops, which are necessary for completing homework assignments, doing in-class work, and communicating with teachers. However, the role of this technology only came into effect during the past decade. William Forbes, Technical Services Coordinator, provides insight into what factors contributed to this change, explaining, “The educational world was tilting towards the functionality of being able to work remotely, at home, to do homework on it, to email.” EA staff, including Forbes, attended a conference at the Learning Institute regarding the one-to-one policy of laptops to students in 2012.…
Riley Thibodeau ‘23 From forgetting to wear a tie to committing plagiarism, EA students often subvert the Episcopal’s codes of conduct on various scales of severity. To deal with this, Episcopal has several committees in place to hear about disciplinary infractions, deliberate, and suggest repercussions and restorative courses of action. The committee is composed of teachers from multiple disciplines, and a student representative from the sophomore, junior, and senior class.. The Disciplinary Council is part of a four-tier system to handle student infractions. The first tier, recently added, is the Integrity Council, which includes a student’s advisor, form dean, the…
Maggie Dugery ‘23 Sarah Kotapka ‘23 College Board statistics indicate that around 775,000 students took the AP Literature and AP Language exams in 2021. In recent years, Episcopal students are typically not among those taking the exams. Although Episcopal Academy features a wide-ranging, challenging curriculum that offers regular, honors, and AP classes in almost every subject, AP Literature (AP Lit) and AP Language (AP Lang) are two courses that EA notably does not offer. While these courses are a part of many high schools’ curricula across the country, they have never been taught at EA. In fact, up until five…
