Alexis Fulscaldo ‘22 The second weekend in November has always been filled with tradition, as athletes gather to fight for the sweater and the banner. Spirit week leads the students into the weekend, excitement building with each day’s new theme, and culminates in the pep rally on Friday. Each team is composed of players that are of great importance to EA’s victories this season. FOOTBALL: For the boys, our battle against the Fords is fought to the very end each time, and this year promises to be no different. This year’s football team is led by senior quarterback Maurcus McDaniel,…

Celia Gallagher ‘21 | Ella Sundstrom ‘21 Episcopal Academy field hockey standout Corinne Zanolli ‘17 continues to impress at Stanford and on the international level. At Stanford, Corinne is able to juggle being a student, as she is a political science major, with field hockey, which typically has practice three hours a day with additional lifts twice a week. Corinne shares about her team, “I love having a team full of my best friends who all are working so hard towards a common goal. There is nothing better than walking into a field, everyone giving their all, and achieving a…
Celia Gallagher ’21 Ella Sundstrom ’21: Field hockey team member, Jessica Miller ‘21 says, “Because we were so successful last year, we definitely have a target on our back to perform the way we did last year.” Coming out of the PAISAA tournament last year as champions, the pressure is on for the EA girls field hockey team to repeat last year’s events. In the preseason rankings, the team was ranked second in Pennsylvania and fourth in the nation. Despite losing four multi-year All-League honorees last year, hope lies in a young squad as well as in two new additions…
Nicholas Christos ’20 Aarushi Singh ’20 Noble Brigham ’20 Introduction For Scholium’s first issue of the year, we wanted to thank Episcopal for everything it has done for us over the years. We truly think that Episcopal has shaped us for the better. The three of us have compiled a list of aspects of EA that we especially appreciate, things we hope the administration continues in the future. They are what make the institution so special to us. To support some of our opinions, we sent out a survey to the entire Upper School student body on September 24th, 2019,…
Albert Chen ’23 Following the recent expulsion at Episcopal due to the use of a racial epithet on social media, multiple initiatives have been put into place while existing ones have increased in intensity in order to better combat racism and promote diversity. Spearheading many of these efforts is Ayinde Tate, Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Tate explains that the incident has “opened the door to a lot of conversations with students as well as the Upper School administration, which, as awkward as it is, in the grand scheme of things, is pretty positive that we are able to have…

Anjali Bose ’20 During her time at Episcopal Academy, Isabel Handal ‘20 has shown exemplary skills in the visual arts, specifically 2-D. “Ever since I was little I’ve been interested in art,” says Handal, “because it’s a way that I get to express my creativity in a non-stressful way. But I love being able to actually have a class to go to where I can really channel my creative energy into something beautiful.” Handal found her passion for art at a young age. “I started in middle school with art, which I really liked, then I went into high school…
Caden Collins ‘23 Eshika Tangri ‘23: Students walking past the Mainstage theater may have noticed the new distinctive silver lettering lining the wall. Recently, the Mainstage has received a new name, The Carrafiell Family Theater, named after an alumni of The Episcopal Academy, John Carrafiell ‘83. Suzanne Schaffer, Director of Leadership Giving in the Office of Advancement, states, “Over 10 years ago, we relocated the campus. The school raised about one hundred million dollars for the new campus. John Carrafiell, at that time, made a seven-figure gift to the school, and only within the past couple of years decided how…
Margaret Lo ‘23 Gianna Trala ‘23: In place of last year’s winter dance, EA’s first Homecoming Dance will act as a precursor to the big EA/AIS/Haverford weekend, which will be two weeks later. This event will take place on Saturday, October 26th from 7:30-9:30 in the Lower School gym. Episcopal Academy has never before held a homecoming dance, due to the other dances that were occasionally held, but this changed because of the student-wide demand for this dance in particular. This event is largely run by Student Council and supported by recommendations from the class of 2020, which are both hoping…
Kathleen Mark ‘21: David Sigel, Chair of the Art Department, is very passionate about his art and incorporating his students into his life. Art has always been a part of Sigel’s life: he says, “I was encouraged by my parents at a young age to take courses that I was interested in. I had two creative parents who encouraged us to be creative and curious.” As a young child he, “had piles of notebooks and sketchbooks I would draw in them every day.” Sigel continues, “my parents also had my siblings and me do summer programs that included art.” Sigel…
Case Hummer ‘20 Clemson University (currently ranked fourth in soccer in the country according to the NCAA) has already claimed this EA soccer standout. Trevor Manion is a captain of EA’s varsity soccer team and also the starting goalie. He has been on the varsity team since sophomore year and has consistently been a great contributor. Manion looks to have a great season this year and will help lead the relatively young team to success. Manion started playing soccer when he was four years old in a local league with his brother. He has developed throughout the years as a…
Ally Wilchusky ‘21 Morgan Perry ‘21 Episcopal Academy has a powerful legacy of having top level sports teams and an organized athletic program. In previous years, there has been talk of unfair treatment between the girls’ and boys’ sports teams, especially involving the cross country and track teams. However, this “discrepancy” seems to be a common misunderstanding among the students. Gina Buggy and Jim Farrell provide insight on the reasoning behind why girls were required to practice in their sports bras and how currently, the rules are more lenient in terms of what they are allowed to run in. A common…

Vince Vento ‘21 The media, in a multitude of ways, has failed the general American public in its attempts to be transparent and uninfluenced by a particular agenda. Time and time again, we have seen that it is not just Fox News and CNN that push a certain agenda while neglecting to tell a true depiction of what is going on. In order for journalism to properly function, it is necessary for news outlets to include stories that are not just catchy or clickbait but that tell the stories of those who are fighting for change in the world. Indigenous…
Arielle Ketchum ‘20 Non-black people should not say the n-word. As a black person, it hurts me to hear the n-word coming out of other people’s mouths, because of what the word means and represents. Many people know that it is wrong for non-black people to say the n-word because this is what they have been taught. However, many of these same people don’t understand why. Last month, a non-black student used the n-word on social media. Following the student’s expulsion, discussions in some of my classes raised the question of “Why is the n-word such a big deal?” The…

Mia Cabral ‘22 Gianna Cilluffo ‘22 Abby Gallo: They are on our fields and our buildings, in our homes and our trees. These monsters can be found just about anywhere, jumping and attacking us when we least expect it. They are the spotted lanternflies, and unless something is done, they could be here to stay. Starting around the fall of last year, you might have seen these menaces lurking around Pottstown, Phoenixville, and other southeastern Pennsylvania towns. This year, they have reached EA. Originating in Asia, spotted lanternflies most likely made their way here via shipping containers in 2014. Their…
