Kat Barber ’23 | Bridget Murphy ’25 Many EA students pursue the arts in college as their majors or extracurriculars. Two artists, Paloma Zozaya ’18 and Madeleine Ott ’22 describe their journeys in artistic fields during and post-college. After graduating from EA, Zozaya went on to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), majoring in graphic design and minoring in art history. Zozaya states, “In my senior year at RISD I interned for Clear Channel Outdoor, an out-of-home media company, designing ads. I graduated in the spring of 2022. After graduating I took time to travel; I backpacked with…

Cassidy Ott ’25 | Ishani Khanna ‘25 | Emi Enakhimion ‘24 Recent changes in the detention policy this school year have resulted in controversy among the student body, sparking debate about the elevated punishments. While the new detention policy may seem rigid, especially compared to the more relaxed rules in effect during the pandemic over the last two years, they are actually appropriate for dress code violations. However, in terms of attendance policy, EA should consider lessening the punishment for lateness due to the various, uncontrollable factors that affect being on-time to class. Despite student complaints about punishments for dress…

Ishan Bhattacharyya ’23 | Shawn Wang ’23 #1 Ms. Cynthia Crum: Connoisseur of College Counseling When it comes to the “shoe game,” some prioritize quantity, and some prioritize quality. There is wolf gray and blood red, the classiest footwear and the most comfortable, all encapsulated in these eleven rows of dazzling brilliance. One could even metaphorize this image, saying that it embodies the strength and vivacity of the College Counseling Office along with the incredible volume of the college…
Midterm elections are coming up. Due to voting age restrictions, many students are not thinking about how they will cast their vote. But for those who are voting for the first time, properly determining which candidate you may vote for is important. The Scholium staff requested that each political club contribute a statement to help guide students in their journey towards a vote. We invite student perspective to be heard, so please contact any member of the Scholium staff, listed on page 2, with comments or inquiries. Young Democrats: With midterms approaching, it is crucial that we do our part…

Riya Mukherjee ’23 | Gavin Schmidt ’24 We believe that the current designated study spaces for students, like lounges and the library, do not allow for productive work due to the high volume of speaking. We ask that EA provide completely quiet areas for students who cannot work in loud spaces. During free periods, students are first encouraged to study in their class lounge. Although these spaces are beneficial for peer-to-peer discussion or socialization, the students who would like to work in silence cannot utilize them due to distractions. Furthermore, many students prefer to eat in their lounges, making the…
Colin Schlitt ‘24 | Gautam Ketkar ‘24 Over a decade ago, there where only a handful of students who were enrolled in computer science courses. Today, there are 203 students. Matthew Memmo, Chair of the Computer Science Department, explains the growth of participation in computer science classes, stating that “In my second year, I had one kid who wanted to take AP Computer Science A (Advanced), so they offered it in the course catalog the next year and it grew from there.” One of the main problems that limited the department’s growth was the lack of faculty to teach these courses.…

Kat Barber ‘23 | Bridget Murphy ‘25 Jen D’Angelo ‘06, EA alumna and emerging screenwriter, wrote the sequel to the iconic Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus, and returned to EA via Zoom to discuss her background, writing process, and give advice to students. D’Angelo’s love for writing began in Lower School at Episcopal. She remarks, “I mean, the book project [where she wrote her first book]that they do in Lower School in Second Grade. I remember my younger self being like, ‘I am a novelist. I have written a book,’ and I loved it so much. So [writing] was definitely something…
Daniel Adibi ‘26 It’s that time of year to root for the blue and the white, as EA will play against Haverford and AIS on November 11th and 12th. Each year, the EA community comes together to cheer on student athletes in five athletic competitions for the boys and four athletic competitions for the girls. This event sparks EA’s school spirit and unifies the community through the ultimate goal of claiming the sweater and the banner. Michael Letts, Head of Upper School, explains that “[EA/Haverford/AIS day] is a time when the entire EA community, from alums to parents to students…

Ava Roberts ‘24 | Mahika Ralhan ‘26 When returning to campus this fall, students found classrooms reconfigured around long tables, and upon entering the Athletic Center, they were greeted by refreshed modern floors. EA made alterations to the campus this past summer and pursued them for two main reasons: to transition back to normalcy after the COVID-19 pandemic and to refurbish older aspects of the campus. The most notable changes are the reinstallation of the Harkness tables in classrooms and the new flooring in the Dixon Athletic Center. As the EA community returned to campus in 2020 in the midst…
Nayan Shankaran ‘24 | Elle du Pont ‘25 | Sophia Hu ‘24 A federal appeals court has blocked U.S. President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan indefinitely. The plan was intended to cancel up to $20,000 of debt for students and families, who are struggling from the effects of the pandemic. Despite this move, for citizens who have not yet applied for student loan forgiveness, “the application on studentaid.gov remains open… the temporary order does not prevent borrowers from applying for relief,” according to NPR. Per whitehouse.gov, the official website of the White House, the plan outlined three steps that…

Rohan Dalal ‘25 Since the start of the school year, EA has received complaints from teachers, students, and parents about traffic impeding their arrival to campus. As a result, the administration is pursuing efforts to reduce such traffic in the circle that feeds into the main entrance of campus. Head of Upper School Michael Letts attributes the increase in traffic to higher enrollment in the Lower School. “I think our numbers in the Lower School grew quite a bit over COVID, so I think a lot of this is that we have a much higher enrollment over the last two…
Riya Shankaran ‘26 In a Town Hall meeting with the EA community on October 6, Head of Upper School Michael Letts announced that the school will continue to evaluate its academic, behavioral, and mental health services. The administration will look for ways to expand programming to students and add more structure to existing programs. “[EA will aim to] do more directed programming across all divisions, infuse it into the coursework, and create a course in the Middle School or Upper School that is much more directed and spends more targeted time on [mental health],” states Letts. Letts believes that the…
Connor Shanahan ’24 What have been the major factors for the Phillies’s World Series run? Austin Bouvel: “Definitely Bryce Harper, I think he will win MVP this year. The Phillies have done a great job of building a team around him, and he is their best hitter. Other players like Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins, and Jean Segura have also stepped up to the plate with crucial runs. I also think the pitching for the Phillies has been really good, with Zach Wheeler being the main pitcher, and surprisingly Jose Alvarado and Seranthony Dominguez from the bullpen have also made great plays…
