Upcoming art shows: Celebrating the Student Body

As the school year comes to a close, Episcopal’s artists are finishing their final pieces of art and taking all their art home. However, the gallery is not quite done yet; the seniors might already be done with their art classes, but their talent has not yet been celebrated.

Usually, the Dora Khayatt competition is the last show of the year in the gallery. That particular show is meant to honor those who participated and those who won and to celebrate the outstanding art that is made by all students. However, this year, the Art Department is organizing two more shows before the end of the school year. First, there will be a short show for the lamps made in the Honors 3D Design classes, followed by the final show, the senior portfolio show, which will display art made by seniors from all of EA’s art classes.

The lamps that were made in the 3D classes were part of a project that intended mainly to allow the students to be creative and to bring their own artistic influence into the project. Annie Rau ‘19, a student in the class and a recipient of a Dora Khayatt prize, said, “Everyone had their own unique idea, and it gave us more freedom on what to do.” The final results of the project were all different, and part of the reason why these lamps will have their own show is because of this variety, as well as the students’ talent reflected in the lamps. Rau added, “It was impressive to see all the lamps come together and see how they were all unique in their own ways.”

David Sigel, 2-D art teacher and head of the Arts Department, said, “We were really impressed by the art that was made, so we decided to do these two shows, especially for the seniors who have given so much to our art classes, and have created incredible pieces of art.”

The senior portfolio show will follow up the lamps’ show. Morgan Messner ‘18, a senior who has been in 3-D Honors Art more than once, stated, “Senior year can get emotional, and times like [this show] are when you realize how much support you have in your classes.” This show is important, as it allows the student body to honor and celebrate the seniors who inspire other artists in their classes to continue making unique art. Sigel stated confidently, “The seniors, and I’d say this class especially, have made incredible art, and it’s worth celebrating.”
