March’s Project of the Month is the life-size dog sculptures constructed by students of the Honors 3-D Design class. The project has been in progress since the beginning of the second semester. After conducting anatomy studies with sketches and diagrams, the students made small clay models of the dogs in the position of their choice. Then, they constructed the sculpture with cardboard, starting with an outline of the main body and continuing with the legs.
Hilary Hutchison, Upper School 3-D Art Teacher, explained the creation process further, “The challenges involve learning about the anatomical structure of the figure and gesture, i.e. a reclining dog or walking cat, and figuring out how to translate and describe the structure and form with geometrical shape and flat stock cardboard.” The artists that were involved in this project include Nicholas Peyton ‘19, Theodore Vadot ‘19, Sam Wilson ‘19, Kate Beinkampen ‘19, Ann Elisabeth Rau ‘19, Madeline Loughead ‘19, Ryan Rockenbach ‘19, Jack Henderson ‘19, Michael Zeng ‘19, Catherine Spellman ‘19, Hadley DeBruyn ‘20, Melanie Lim ‘20 and Sophia Garino ‘20.
