Alex Burman ’16, Meghan Manley ’16: Hard working is one of many traits that Julia Hondros ’16 embodies. A starter for EA’s Girl’s Lacrosse team, Julia Hondros ’16 continues to prove herself as a valuable asset to the team, on and off the field.
Perfectly exemplifying the “EA Athlete”, Julia Hondros ’16 leads through hard work, leadership, and respect. Coach Josie Ferri, Head lacrosse coach for EA Girl’s Lacrosse, looks back on Week 1 of last year’s lacrosse season, “Our team slogan last year was “ALL IN” and we gave out bracelets weekly to players who the coaches thought demonstrated the motto most in practice that week. For week 1, we had the team vote for the player who they believed best exemplified our slogan thus far, and Julia Hondros received votes from almost every single one of her teammates. They look up to her, believe in her ability, and follow her leadership.”
Hondros’s skills are evident. Arriving at the beginning of her second varsity lacrosse season, she has already accumulated various accomplishments. Hondros was a vital member of the 2014 Inter-Ac Championship lacrosse team, earning herself 2014 Honorable Mention All Main Line at the end of the season. Outside of her EA career, Hondros has also been awarded numerous accolades, including earning a spot on the 2014 National Tournament Philly Team 1, the 2014 Under Armour Philly Team, the Under Armour All-Tournament Team 2014, and the Dartmouth Classic Camp All-Star.
A team goal for this season is to win every game and for the EA Girl’s Lacrosse Team, the competition they will face this season is huge. The competition ranges, both in and out of league, including last year’s state champs, Garnet Valley, as well as the traditional rivals, Agnes Irwin. Hondros states, “Agnes Irwin always has a strong team because they keep building upon success with losing low numbers to graduation…Emotions always run high during league games but I think the team will be especially excited for the AIS games in April and May.” After suffering their only loss in the league to Agnes Irwin and ultimately surrendering part of the Championship Title to Agnes Irwin (Co-Champions) last season, Hondros and the EA Girls Lacrosse Team are looking forward to one of their biggest games this season.
From freshman year to now, Hondros looks back on her experience thus far, “I was on JV freshman year, so working my way up through the program has been a really cool experience.” As a sophomore, Hondros rocked the midfield with 25 draw controls, 10 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers, and allowed only 4 turnovers the whole season. On attack, Hondros led with the highest shooting percentage as a sophmore, making 65% of all shots on goal, as well as making 50% of all her 8 Meter shots. Hondros ended the season with 13 goals, earning her the 2014 All Main Line Line Honorable Mention.
When asked for her “secret to success”, she simply put it as humility, “I think humbling yourself really goes a long way. You can’t have the mindset that you’re the best, because you’ll never get better. Personally, I always tell myself that there is someone out there who is working harder than me.”
