With EA/Haverford Day on the horizon, the Varsity Boys Golf team secured their second consecutive Inter-Ac title, giving the EA community the necessary confidence and excitement for their upcoming competition.
After tying with Haverford in a previous match and “lackluster” performances in recent matches, the team felt they needed a wake-up call to win Inter-Acs. Captain Freddy Hartmann ’27 acknowledges this obstacle: “In the past, we’ve been lazy, thinking we’d win no matter what.” Hartmann and the team had to recognize their mindset faults and gain enough motivation and competitiveness to win the approaching match against Haverford.
One of their main preparations for the match was mental golf sessions, practices dedicated to improving a player’s psychological and mental strength. George Hampel ’29 states, “We knew our golf potential was there, and our skills [could] get the job done. It was more about supporting each other and having a positive attitude, and that got us to where we wanted to be.”
Particularly, captain Arthur Hampel ’27 and Jack Gioffre ’28 had standout scores against Haverford on Waynesborough’s golf course. Arthur Hampel, especially, delivered a great showing, after having a seemingly flat start to the match. Hartmann says, “[he] had his best match of the year.” Additionally, Gioffre shot two under par, contributing heavily to the team’s success and overall score. Overall, the team scored one over par for Waynesborough’s course, and triumphed over Haverford by three points.
Looking ahead to the EA/Haverford weekend matchups, the boys golf team hopes to maintain their training, dedication, and strong team spirit through daily practice. The competition against Haverford will draw fans from both schools, intensifying the match atmosphere and giving the athletes an environment to encourage them to succeed.
Episcopal is keeping up the high morale and determination, moving towards EA/Haverford Day this Friday, when the Churchman will face The Haverford School at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
