With Father Gavin taking on a 7th grade religion class, the Upper School welcomes Reverend Michael Palmisano on day one Chapel services. Usually seen directing middle school Chapel or instructing a Biblical Literature class in the Upper School, Reverend Palmisano understands the spiritual diversity of his audience and hopes to bring his unique perspective to a larger group of students.

Reverend Palmisano emphasizes the importance of being attentive and introspective during the speeches, saying, “Right before the blessing, I like to reflect on what the speaker had said so that people can reflect upon the speech.” Palmisano also acknowledges the significance of his role in Chapel and the community as a whole, commenting, “I feel like it’s a privilege of the role that I get from being in front of the community as a pastor to help the people understand.” It’s evident that the Upper School will greatly benefit from hearing a different voice, allowing students to be guided by another prominent figure in the community.

Father Gavin shares some of his insight into Reverend Palmisano’s new position, noting, “He has a gift for bringing out the best in people, and his leadership in Upper School Chapel on day one offered our students a unique and inspiring voice…His presence gives Upper School students a model of someone who embodies The Stripes and encourages them to uncover their own paths with courage and faith.” With Reverend Palmisano handling day one Chapel services, Father Gavin can continue teaching in the middle school, whilst the schedule allows for experimentation with different perspectives on readings and speeches alike.

For both Father Gavin, and Reverend Palmisano, being a chaplain as well as a teacher at Episcopal is a lot to manage. However, Father Gavin assures that, “For me, balancing Chapel responsibilities with teaching feels very natural. As a priest, both scripture and liturgy hold a special place in my heart…Because I have the privilege of working with Lower, Middle, and Upper School students, the variety and joy of those connections make the balance not a burden but a gift.”

Students also shared positive reactions to the new adjustment in Chapel leadership. Senior Warden Brandon Bin ’26 commented, “It’s a great experience for Rev. P to also work with the Upper School and not just the Middle School…it’s nice to have a good variety and not just always Father Gavin running Chapel; it’s nice to see a different person up there.” Many students agreed that Reverend Palmisano’s involvement adds new energy and insight to the services. With him taking on a larger role, the Upper School community looks forward to fresh perspectives that continue to challenge and inspire them.

Episcopal’s Chapel is home to some of the most thought-provoking and diverse orations, from personal anecdotes to reflections on faith, identity, and the challenges of modern life. Reverend Palmisano expresses his hopes for the future, saying, “When people graduate, [I hope] they see Chapel as an informative space in EA. A place to sing, or just listen to good speeches. There’s something for everyone.” Under Reverend Palmisano’s leadership, the Upper School will be sure to further reflect upon the lessons that come from speakers. His presence promises to enrich the community’s spiritual life while encouraging students to discover deeper meaning in their everyday experiences.
