Boys Waterpolo- Timmy Freese ’14
The boys’ water polo team has stayed tough after the loss of a strong senior class, with almost as many wins as losses this season. Last year, the team beat Haverford with a stunning 16-3 victory. This year’s senior captains, Jack Forgash ‘12 and Kyle Leidhesier ’12 are planning to repeat this victory. Chris Cusack ’15 said he feels good going into the game, but noted that it will be a close one. Cusack also is predicting big games from Cullen McShane ’15 and Korey Leidheiser ’14. Junior goalie Kellen Edmondson said, “We have progressed from the beginning of the season; of course, there is room for improvement, but by EA/Haverford day we will be a unified team and have a great chance of winning.” Leidheiser said, “I think the team has made significant improvements since the beginning of the year, and I think we’re ready to compete against Haverford this weekend.”
Boys Golf- Timmy Freese ’14
Boys’ golf is the newest addition to EA/Haverford day, as this is the first year that golf is a fall sport. The team is led by its two junior captains, Alex Dupre and Sean Fahey, and seniors Jack Dordleman, Burk FitzPatrick, Tim Longen and Zach Caraher. The team came in third place in the Inter-Ac and has a record of one loss and one tie against Haverford’s squad. Andrew Jannetta ’14 said, “We have three very well performing juniors; Alex Dupre, Kevin Flannery, and Sean Fahey. We have a lot of new senior support as well as a large sophomore base.” Senior team member Tim Longen said, “It should be a close match. We’ve had a good season…Joey Chambers, our freshman number four, has been very consistent this season and is an important part of our team’s success.”
Boys Soccer- Katie Howlin ’12
The boys’ soccer team had a good start to their season, winning five of the first six games. Colin Hartzell ’12 said that on EA/Haverford day this year, “we will win, it’s going to be close, but we’ll win by 1 or 2.” Co-Captains Sam Lawlor ’12 and Jon Garino ’12 echoed this sentiment, with Lawlor noting that though they lost the first game against Haverford, it was close. “We learned a lot, now we’ll know what to expect. We’re going to come out harder.” Defensive player Billy McAvoy ’12 said that a key component in the upcoming game will be “our solid defense.” Episcopal players to watch include goalie Jay Farrell ’12 and Dutch Buckley ’14. This is the boys’ second season under Head Coach David Knox, who revolutionized the program by introducing summer trips to England and North Carolina. The Haverford soccer team is currently ranked 11th nationally by ESPN. Despite the 13-0-1 record of the Fords, Hartzell remains optimistic, assuring that “Dutch is going to put one in.”
Golf: Timmy Freese ‘14
Boy’s golf is the newest addition to Episcopal/Haverford day, as this is the first year that golf is being played in the fall. The team is led by its two junior captains, Alex Dupre and Sean Fahey as well as seniors Jack Dordleman, Burk FitzPatrick, Tim Longen, and Zach Caraher. Through tournaments, the team has come in 3rd place in the Inter-Ac and in doing so lost and tied against Haverford’s squad. The boys are feeling confident that the Haverford match will be a good one, and they are eager to have a final chance to beat Haverford. Andrew Janetta ’14 said that “we have three very high performing juniors; Alex Dupre, Kevin Flannery, and Sean Fahey. We have a lot of new senior support as well as a large sophomore base.”
Football: Drew DeBacco ‘14
Regarding this year’s game against Haverford, Co-captain Joe Flannery ’12 said, “We’re looking forward to the challenge, they’re a strong team in all three phases of the game. We’re definitely going to give it a [heck] of a shot.” In past years, the sweater has come down to the football game, as it is the last game of the day. Todd Fairlie, head coach, said, “Obviously it’s a big game, all the seniors are looking forward to the day and we’re looking for them to come up big.” Defense is one of the major strengths of this year’s team, and it will be put to the test against a strong Haverford offense. Flannery also noted that all the seniors are “looking forward to finishing their EA football careers with a dominant win at home over a strong opponent. We can’t make any promises but it will definitely be a [heck] of a game.”
Boys Cross Country: Katie Howlin ’12, Richie Palazzese ‘14
The boys’ cross country team lost a strong senior class last year, though this year’s squad is living up to past successes. The team, led by Captain Patrick Sernyak ’12 has been training hard. Michael Smerconish ’14 said, “I look up to [Pat] because he never stops running.” Tom Bowman ’12 said that Sernyak, along with Charlie Kinzig ’12, Doug Pratt ’12, Matt London ’13, Steven Lucey ’13, and Michael and Ryan Quinlan ’14 are among runners to watch. Jimmy Larkin ’14 added that “everyone has improved dramatically including Matt London,” who was the first Episcopal runner to finish at Inter-Acs on October 17th. With regards to Haverford, who Episcopal defeated 24-33 (low score wins) on September 13th, Sernyak said, “We have defeated Haverford in all four meetings with them, but it will by no means be a definite win. We need to make sure we push ourselves the hardest to capture the win on EA/Haverford day.”
