As the end of her EA piano career approaches, Alice Wu ’26 reflects on her extensive musical journey. “I’ve been playing the piano for about 12 years. I started when I was six, when my parents signed me up for lessons,” she reminisces. “Over the years, it’s grown from an obligation into more of a personal interest and pursuit.” Wu’s skill and devotion to her passion has inspired many people around her, especially her friends and classmates. Chloe Islam ’26, a close friend, shares her thoughts: “What I admire most about Alice is that she is really committed to practicing piano everyday; and when she practices I think for a large percentage of the time she goes at it consistently. I also think that it is really great how she really loves piano enough to be able to spend that much of her time doing it.” Islam continues: “Music plays a big part in Alice’s life. I know that she has been playing piano most of her life since she was younger. Alice also does a bunch of competitions, so it really shows how invested she is in playing music and interacting with other musicians and learning from them as well.”

Wu’s drive for improvement is also evident to everyone who knows her. Ivie Enakhimion ’26, another close friend, states that, “Art plays a big role in Alice’s life…I know she is very dedicated to piano and she often practices, and so a commitment like that definitely has a special place in her life. I admire Alice’s hard work and ability to balance so many things very gracefully.” Playing a musical instrument takes hard work and consistent practicing, which isn’t easy. Mr. Jim Erwin, Music Department Chair, also adds his thoughts on Wu’s devotion to music, “Alice’s piano playing has both a combination of discipline and heart. When she performs it showcases both her love of the music as well as her hours of hard work.” Not only does Wu have an incredible talent for the piano, but she also has the unique skill of time management, expertly navigating both school and music.

Her impressive skill at the piano comes from her passion for the instrument. “I love how music and piano provide an endless ability to create and imagine. Music can take place in so many different forms and styles, and it becomes a beautiful way to connect people.” Her love for piano is easy to see for anyone who’s seen her play. Wu’s talent really does connect people, whether at performances or during Dora Khayatt; her music unites people through her impressive and enchanting songs. Wu has been adding some new repertoire to her arsenal as well: “Recently, I’ve been working on Ravel’s Une barque sur l’océan and Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 20. Additionally, I have been making recordings of past pieces such as Ravel’s Jeux d’eau and Chopin’s Ballade No. 3. As I’m leaving for college next year, I’ve also been bringing back some pieces I have played over the past several years so I can keep them in my repertoire. I’ve been enjoying this process because I can see how my playing style, interpretation, and technique have evolved,” Wu comments.

Wu’s love of and commitment to the piano is a true inspiration to all. Her discipline, passion, and dedication exemplify what it means to grow as a person and artist simultaneously.  She works hard and keeps striving for better, continuing to flourish in the musical world. Wu’s playing does more than inspire those around her, it also aims to showcase her meaning of devotion to the arts.
