Moose Recktenwald ’14, Tyler Haab ,14: A true gentleman on and off the court, Patrick McCarthy ’13, has been chosen as the December Boys’ Athlete of the Month.
As a member of the squash team, McCarthy has been a part of four National Championships and four Inter-Ac titles. With the leadership of the senior class, the squash team this year has set the bar high: to win their ninth straight interact championship.
Devin McLaughlin ’13, co-captain, has high hopes for the year stating, “I think we are definitely in the running for another undefeated season and National Championship.”
McLaughlin added that the team’s biggest competition this season is the Belmont Hill School in Boston. McLaughlin confidently noted, “We have the talent to beat them, and anyone for that matter, but we’re definitely going to have to play some of our best squash if we want to win.”
McCarthy, a naturally driven athlete, echoes McLaughlin’s statement, noting “We will fight to be Inter-Ac and national champions; that was the goal from day one.”
The ladder this year is very competitive with McCarthy settling in the fifth spot. McCarthy is always described as a hard worker who comes prepared to practice. He works about nine hours a week with and team and by himself to improve his game.
His hard work has paid off: McCarthy has committed to Colby College for squash. Thrilled with the opportunity to continue his squash career in college, McCarthy stated “I’m going to a great school with great people and I’m joining a team where I can enjoy myself while making an immediate impact.”
McCarthy is excited to come to practice not only for the sport but also because he enjoys spending time with his teammates. He commented, “It’s as good as it has ever been. We have a great group of seniors who are all very tight, and a solid group of underclassmen who have meshed well.”
McCarthy is amazed at how far he has come in the six years since he started playing squash in middle school.
He recalled, “I started playing squash seriously when I was about eight years old. My dad played a little in college, and wanted to get my brother and me involved. Once I started playing, I loved it and haven’t stopped since.”
McCarthy respects all of his teammates and coaches, and emphasized that McLaughlin and Kevin Flannery ‘13 are consistent leaders and excellent co-captains, who help him and the rest of the team reach their full potential best every week.
