Nick Schreder ‘22 is March’s Artist of the Month for his impressive work in photography and dedication to making it a substantial part of his life. Schreder first got into photography during the fall of 8th grade when he broke his ankle playing football. “I was left with nothing to do for the rest of the season except stand on the sidelines,” explains Schreder. “I borrowed a camera to take some pictures of friends, and I’ve been taking pictures ever since.”
After gaining some sports photography experience, Schreder decided to apply for an internship with a media company that works closely with Villanova University called AKSM Media. After the application process and interviews, he began interning with a branch of their company, AKSM Photography, and has been assigned different sports photography at Villanova, ranging from their women’s and men’s lacrosse teams to their football team and even their notable men’s basketball program.
Additionally, Schreder runs his own media and photography company called Schreder Photo, where he works on a variety of projects including photographing sports teams at EA. He noted that he enjoys “sports photography the most because of the fast-paced action and when big plays happen. It is always a great feeling to look back and see what pictures were captured.” To this end, EA football quarterback Jake Fant ‘22, who has been photographed by Schreder during football games, comments, “He always seems to capture the best moments of a game on camera.”
When asked to discuss Schreder’s photography for different EA teams, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Todd Fairlie comments, “Nick does a terrific job and you can tell he has a great passion for photography. His work is really good for someone who is relatively new to the game.” Head Girls’ Lacrosse Coach Josie Tomaino also notes, “Nick Schreder is a great photographer. He does an incredible job capturing our athletes in action. The girls love the pictures!”
“Nick has taken shots for many sports on campus but will usually be seen at football and basketball games,” Fairlie adds. A lot of his work can be seen on social media pages for EA sports and shots are given directly to the individuals photographed. Tomaino explains, “He shares the pictures quickly through Google Drive for efficiency purposes.” Fant mentions, “His pictures are so defined and seem to always go well with the surrounding colors. The blurry background and the really vivid subject in the picture makes them all look super cool.”
Although Schreder mainly works independently with his photography, he did take a class with former Photography teacher Michael Leslie his sophomore year and notes that it helped him to “learn a lot about the more technical side of photography as well as the editing process.”
When asked about any future plans with photography, Schreder states, “I definitely see myself with a camera in the future as a hobby and maybe a part-time gig,” adding that he would love the opportunity to photograph more professional sports in the future. Fairlie notes, “Nick takes his work very seriously and has tremendous potential if this is what he wishes to pursue.”
