Mia Filipovski ‘23 is known in and out of the pool for her hard work/dedication, and leadership abilities. She is a co-captain of both the Girls’ water polo and swimming teams.
Filipovski competitively swims and plays water polo. She explains, “I started swimming competitively when I was 5 years old, so its been close to 12 years now.” Regarding water polo, she remarked, “I started playing water polo in 9th grade when I got to EA. Swimming was my main sport at that point, so I thought that water polo would be a fun sport to play, and also they didnt offer it at my public school”
Filipovski has earned many accolades and accomplishments in both her swimming and waterpolo careers. For swimming, she won Easterns, placed sixth in 100 back at Inter-Ac’s, and was a finalist in 2019 at 100 back at Inter-Ac’s. For water polo, she has won Easterns twice (2019, 2020), and she won Flight Two of Beast of the East in 2019.
Filpovski’s coaches and teammates characterize her as a hard worker on and off the pool deck. Lily Hendrickson ‘24, a member of the Girls’ water polo and swim teams, remarks, “Whether it be swimming or water polo, Mia always puts her best work into everything she does. She is always swimming extra to get faster, or trying to practice passing or her shot to be a better water polo player.” She continues, “This hard work makes her a very successful swimmer, and water polo player as she is a very fast swimmer.”
Talia Thomas ‘25 echoes a similar message, saying, “Mia’s aim to always improve and her work ethic model as an inspiration for the team. Seeing how hard she works, motivates all of the team to live up to her standard, and that helps us all become better athletes.” Girls Varsity Water Polo Coach John Kelly adds, “Mia is a tremendous leader due to her character, work ethic, and charisma. She gets the team to buy into the culture and her love for the game.”
Filipovski is known for her leadership abilities, as she is a captain of both the water polo and swimming teams. Kelly remarks, “I am sad I only coached her in water polo for one season because Mia truly loves the game, and her teammates, and wants everyone to find success.” Thomas adds, “Mia has a great awareness for the team, and always makes sure we are okay. She is also a very unselfish player, who is always looking to help others succeed whether that be helping fix your form for swimming, or passing the ball on a fast break instead of shooting.”
Hendrickson echoes a similar sentiment remarking, “Mia’s a great leader as she can bring the team together. Especially in water polo, communication is essential and she does a very good job facilitating that.” Hendrickson continues, “Mia’s enthusiasm is also contagious and she always manages to put a smile on our faces or cheer us up not matter the situation.”
Kelly concludes that, “Mia’s ability as a defender, scorer, and playmaker makes her an integral part of any water polo team. You combine her athletic talents with her leader leadership, and Mia is one of the most formidable players as soon as she walks onto the pool deck.”
