Sports reporting is a career many students might think they can not pursue until college. Myles Davis ‘22 knows better! Passionate about sports reporting and marketing, Davis has already begun chasing this dream and has met several famous, talented athletes and visited interesting athletic events. Extremely knowledgeable about the sports world, Davis puts in the time and effort to explore the sports reporting business.

PASS THE MIC: Davis interviews Chase Young on his 2019 season during the 2020 Maxwell Football Club Awards Ceremony.

Regarding his beginnings in the field, Davis states, “Since I was young, I’ve always been interested in sports. As I grew up, I realized that I could have a job in sports reporting and that really appealed to me.” Through Play-By-Play Sports Broadcasting Camps, Davis has taken his reporting skills to the next level. The program was “created by Jeremy Treatman to help kids pursue sports reporting. This program has really done that by helping me grow not only as a reporter but as a person.” Davis adds, “I decided to participate in this program because it was a chance to gain experience and make new friends.”

The camp takes place nationwide, including in Philadelphia, where Villanova University will be its host this year. Focused on teaching, broadcasting, and utilizing social media, the camp has speakers such as ESPN writers and announcers, professional athletes, and national NFL reporters like Charles Barkley and Adam Schefter.

Through this program, Davis has been able to see tangible achievement and growth, demonstrated by his attendance of the college football Maxwell Awards in 2020. “Some of the best athletes across the country come to this event. A few of the athletes I was able to meet were Bryce Young, Torrey Smith, Brian Westbrook, and I even got to interview Chase Young, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.”

When asked what makes him love sports reporting so much, Davis responded, “I love it because I get to express my opinion in the world of sports.”

Sameer Kumar ‘22 has seen Davis develop his love for reporting. “Sports broadcasting is something that Myles is really passionate about. He’s always had a lot to say about sports, so it’s great to see him really pursuing his interests. He puts a lot of effort into researching different topics about a variety of sports, and is very dedicated to reporting and sharing his opinions through his social media accounts and podcasts.” Similarly, Nik Walling ‘22 shares that “for as long as I’ve known him, Myles has always been enthusiastic about athletics, and I think sports reporting has been a way for him to even further pursue his interests in that regard. He works hard to apply the lessons he’s learned from sports broadcasting camps, starting up and maintaining his own sports news pages on social media, and making sure to invite discussion and engagement from all his followers.”

Davis explains how his experiences have changed his view of his future. “Although I love sports reporting because I get to express my opinions in the world of sports, I have now realized I prefer the behind-scenes activities, so I would really like to hopefully be a general manager of an NBA team one day. However, I was definitely very interested in doing sports reporting at first when I was young and I am very optimistic to continue sports reporting for as long as I can.”
