The boys’ spring track and field team has performed phenomenally the past few years with the help of its key pole-vaulter Peter Lim ‘21. Throughout his high school athletics career, Lim has developed his pole-vaulting skills to become a dominant force that wins meets and breaks records. As co-captain, Lim is ready to lead the team to an Inter-ac victory this upcoming season by contributing both on and off the field.
Lim has competed for the track and field team since his freshman year, but only discovered his passion for pole vaulting 2 ½ years ago. Even though he originally had no experience pole vaulting, Lim tried the sport to step out of his comfort zone. Over the years, Lim has made countless memories that will stay with him far beyond his pole-vaulting career. In particular, he reflects fondly on beating the 47-year-old school record last winter, saying “Breaking the school record after clearing 14 feet last winter…was amazing because the crowd was absolutely electric.” Lim proved that his name deserves to be on the athletic center wall and be remembered by future EA athletes for many years to come.
Not only will Lim contribute to EA’s track and field team, but he plans to pole vault in the next chapter of his life: college. Lim says that although “the recruitment process has been very difficult due to Covid,…I’m lucky that my previous seasons have allowed me to be recruited.” While Lim has not committed to a school yet, he hopes that collegiate pole vaulting will be in his very near future.
In addition to being a skillful athlete, Lim is also an excellent role model who helps the team improve every day. He explains, “As a captain, I make sure I lead everyone and help everyone perform to their very best, both in meets and in practice.” Due to COVID-19, competition will be delayed until 2021, but Lim says that “the team is prepared, and I am optimistic that we will have a competitive season.”
Zachary Richards, Boys’ Varsity Spring Track Head Coach, is proud of Lim and his achievements: “It takes a unique person to become that good at a sport in such a short amount of time. Peter is well respected because of his accomplishments. Everyone has seen his improvement over the years and how hard-working he is both on and off the track. He is a leader and a role model for this team.” Commenting on the day Lim soared over 14 feet to break the school pole vaulting record, Richards says that “it was amazing to see his hard work pay off.”
Fellow co-captain, Bradley French ‘21, describes Lim as “someone who leads by example and is always working hard no matter the circumstance.” French credits Lim’s leadership with both his own success and that of the team. Regarding the possibility of a future season, French thinks that “if we put in the work and do our best, I think we will have a ton of success.” Everyone is optimistic about the spring track and field season this year, and both the captains and coaches are holding themselves to their expectations of winning the title this year.
The future looks very bright for the spring track and field team. In the words of Richards, EA “has a very strong team this year because of how deep this team goes so I’m really looking forward to competing and hopefully winning the Inter-Ac.”
