Boston University commit Madison Vetterlein ‘21 is September’s Girls’ Athlete of the Month. Co-Captain of the Episcopal lacrosse team, Vetterlein dominates the field on the defensive side. Coach Josie Tomaino calls the star lacrosse player “a tremendous asset to the program” as both a “leader and a player.”
Tomaino says that as a Freshman on EA’s Varsity Lacrosse team, Vetterlein“worked very hard in order to contribute to the program as a young player. Now as an upperclassman, her teammates rely on her strength and experience on and off the field.” Although Vetterlein has made lifelong memories throughout her time with the EA lacrosse team, she is particularly proud of the team’s second win over Notre Dame during her sophomore year, a victory which clinched the 2019 Inter-Ac title. Vetterlein looks forward to the fight for the Inter-Ac title this year: “I am beyond excited to get the opportunity to play in the interac and battle for the interac title for my senior season”.
When asked about last year’s setback due to the abrupt closure of spring sports, Tomaino shares “it made every single person realize how much they value the privilege of playing and competing together.” Vetterlein agrees that “last season was very difficult for everyone because we were unable to be together and feed off of one another’s energy, but we all checked in on each other.” She adds, “seeing everyones face even on zoom cheered everyone up and helped us stay focused.”
“When I [Tomaino] think of Madison and her play, I think about her coachability and aggressiveness.” This assertiveness can be seen not only on the field during a game, but also in practice. Tomaino continues, “Madison does a great job playing aggressive and hustling 150% in every drill. Her positive energy and intensity is definitely contagious.” Another key to Vetterlein’s success is that she is constantly looking to improve her game. Tomaino describes her as “very quick to make adjustments and listen to a coach’s feedback.” Her desire to improve and her confidence on the field make Vetterlein a strong co-captain of the team. She says that she values “leading such an amazing group of girls and getting to watch our team grow together on and off the field”.
Vetterlein’s commitment to the team is evident to not only her coach, but also her teammates. Maisy Montgomery ‘22 attests that “Madison has a very positive presence on the field and is incredibly hard working. I know she will do an amazing job as captain this year and I am really looking forward to playing with her this season.”
A true leader and a key element to EA’s lacrosse program, Vetterlein will continue to stand out this upcoming season. Her commitment to Boston University’s Division I team is a testament to her skills and aggressiveness. At BU, she hopes “to continue to grow and improve as a student and an athlete and be a part of an amazing community in the city of Boston.” Vetterlein’s final season in an EA lacrosse jersey will be one to follow in the coming months as she is optimistic about the group of girls returning this year and knows that the team will continue to work hard in the off season.
