Energetic, loud, and excited: the atmosphere during the pep rally accurately represents student anticipation for Spirit Week, a week that cumulates with one of Episcopal Academy’s most important athletic competitions: AIS/Haverford Weekend, a deeply rooted tradition in EA’s history. Class of 2020 Class President, Reagan Snyder, states, “Episcopal and Haverford’s rivalry started in 1889 with the first football game between the schools. Since then we’ve expanded the breadth and depth of the weekend to a whole new caliber.” Although the games themselves have been happening for quite some time, Spirit Week in its current form has only been in place for about 15 years. Spirit Week currently features dress downs, a pep rally, an inspiring chapel, friendly competitions between high school grade-levels, and a much bigger competition against Episcopal’s rival schools: Agnes Irwin School and The Haverford School.

Students especially love the spirit week dress downs, and not just because they don’t have to wear uniforms. This rotation of dress downs amongst the high schoolers brings everyone closer as they show their school spirit through a common theme. Another Spirit Week staple is the small competitions between grade levels. Points are earned from classes’ lounge theme and decorations, the dance competitions, and from the winners of various events. The most animated event of Spirit Week is the Friday’s pep rally, which is intended to electrify and stimulate the athletes and students before the games. Kathryn Lynn ‘22 says, “My favorite part is the EA/Haverford video that they show at the pep rally. And the dances, they’re always really funny.” In the end, all of these events are only precursors to the actual games, which take place on Friday and Saturday on the Episcopal campus. Jill McEntee ‘21 says, “I love watching all the events: tug-of-war, dodgeball, it’s so much fun to watch, but the actual sports against AIS and Haverford are definitely my favorite.”
