The fitness program at Episcopal Academy has played a major role in the athletic experience as a whole. The fitness specialists Steve Musacchio and Lara Winter are key to the fitness experience and its success. Coach Steve said he was not naturally in the shape he wanted to be in, so he applied his knowledge about sports and started to work out. Once he got to college he began to see results. In a normal day, Coach Steve will work with adults in the morning and students in the afternoon. Most days he arrives as early as six in the morning. He says the most important part of his job is “to be patient with the students”. Although many students want to become stronger and see results as soon as possible, he says, “It is important to have proper form and also be patient.” The two coaches have helped significantly to support our student athletes progress in their sports. The Middle School Athletic Director, Doctor Borgerson, says that “any schools should have fitness specialists that can dedicate their expertise and further their education”. He also says our coaches Steve and Laura “are constantly trying to get better at their craft, attending conferences frequently, reading up on materials, and making us better athletes”. They have a great balance between the students who are trying to progress in a primary sport and ones that just do fitness as well. Doctor Borgerson says “they are great at differentiating their instruction so that everybody can benefit”. Coaches Steve and Laura are always seen working with athletes in the gym, finding any way to help them which we benefit so much from. We also see them supporting the teams and sports as a whole; coming out to games to support; and cheering on the athletes. Doctor Borgerson states the values of having them where they are “valuable resources for the teams as a whole. The coaches always go to them in order to create programs for the teams”. The students are grateful for having coaches Steve and Laura to help them for a sport or just working out. RJ Glaser emphasized that “they give me aid whenever I need it, if I don’t know if my form is good, I will have Steve or Laura help me”. These Athletes also go to our coaches for extra motivation or form tips. According to James Leroux “they help me in a lot of different ways such as form being the big one, they also give a variety of exercises. They are constantly providing me with new knowledge on how to get in shape”. The Episcopal Academy is so lucky to have two fitness specialists who are so dedicated to help the student athletes strive. Keeping the athletes in shape is such a crucial component for success and they are the ones who do that.
