The Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team, led by Co-Senior Captains Bella Calastri and Grace Hennigan, are off to a great start this season. On September 24th, the team beat AIS outright with a 7-0 victory. Key players Ella Walker ’19 and Natalie Johnston ’19 state “we beat them the first time 7-0, and we have improved since then so we feel very confident in our chances”. On October 16th, the team won the Inter-Ac tournament EA. They then clinched the overall Inter-Ac title the following day with a clutch win over Baldwin. The team is feeling confident they will crush the competition on EA/AIS day.
Both Girls soccer teams have struggled more this season then hoped for. EA is 4-3-1 in the Inter-Ac this year, and Agnes Irwin is 1-8. EA Girls Varsity Coach Andy Fraggos mentioned “I think our season started off a bit rocky in the first seven games, but we have really picked it up the second half of the season. We are 6-1-1 in the past eight games, and I’m looking forward to the last four games of the season together.” Last year, the EA Girls soccer team beat AIS three times during the season, 4-0 and 3-0 in the league and PAISSA, and 2-0 on AIS day. Olivia Dirks ‘19, says she is feeling a “RepEAt sweep” this AIS day. Earlier this season the team beat AIS 4-0 and Dirks says they are “Prepared and feeling ready to defeat the owls once again,” come November 9th. Fraggos adds, “I feel very confident about our chances against Agnes Irwin, but I also know that that’s a game that everyone gets up for and anything can happen.”
While Girls Water Polo will not get to compete during AIS Day, the season so far has been off to a great start! They are currently 9-3 in the season with Wins from GA, Hill, Lawrenceville, and Friends Central. They also were just placed third in the Second Flight of the East Water Polo Tournament. Although the Water Polo team does not have the chance to represent EA on AIS day, they will “definitely be there cheering on our classmates”, says Co-Captain Mollie Bonner ‘19.
One of the most anticipated events on Friday is the Field Hockey game as the teams are well matched. The game will take place at 2:30 as the last event of the day. During last year’s EA/AIS day, Episcopal pulled out a 2-1 win against Irwins. Player Gianna Pantaleo says, ““One word that I would use to describe our team this year is diversity. Having a bunch of different levels of players on the team first, second, third, and fourth year players and some who are moving on to play at the collegiate level, really shows the diversity but also the tenacity and perseverance going out each game giving a desire to win.” During the 2018 season, the EA field hockey team beat AIS 8-1. Agnes Irwin’s field hockey team currently has an 8-7 record. Both teams are excited to play with the support of their schools behind them.
The schools always look forward to the cross-country race, which is the first event of the day. Last year, EA took first, second, and third place in the EA/ AIS day race. Having already played against Episcopal this season, the runners are continuing to train for their upcoming meet. EA beat Agnes Irwins in the Inter-Ac this season as well as last year on AIS day. Brooke Kraftson ‘19 says, “We are relying on Caitlin Jorgenson and Jill McEntee to be in the top three. After having PAISSA this past weekend, we are focusing our next practices on prepping for AIS Day. In the days leading up to it, we begin tapering where we run shorter distances so our muscles can recover and build for the big day.”
