Theodore Vadot ’19:
Hunger Burger in Reading Terminal
A young restaurant lies gracefully in the middle of the nation’s oldest farmers’ market. Hunger Burger, a small burger joint, serves an array of breakfast burgers, some that you might call exotic, as well as a myriad selection of sides, from lobster mac ‘n’ cheese to bacon cheese fries. Another very important part of the menu at Hunger Burger- something the restaurant has a great amount of pride for -are the sauces. Hunger Burger offers a selection of ten delicious sauces, ranging from a peppercorn parmesan sauce to a pineapple habanero sauce.
The burgers are nevertheless the main components of the menu. All the burgers are made from all-natural black angus beef, cooked to perfection; beautifully combined with other toppings, the burgers fill your mouth with a delicious combination of bold flavors. The “YO!’lk Burger,” which has a fried egg, an onion ring, and Hunger Burger’s custom chipotle ketchup sauce is an example of this explosion of flavor. The first bite is always the best, as the yolk spills out of the fried egg, and the sweet and spicy flavor of the sauce comes out. On the next bite, the crispy onion ring comes into play, and adds yet another flavor to the mix. Another burger to try is the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Burger, which will fill your mouth with the rich flavor of melted cheese combined with the delicious smoked flavor of applewood bacon. All of the restaurant’s burgers mix ingredients as such, resulting in gourmet burgers, made quickly, efficiently, and beautifully presented in a white and blue wax paper.
While the food might capture a burger enthusiast’s attention, Hunger Burger has a humanitarian mission behind everything they serve. George and Kim Mickle, the owners of this burger joint and two other restaurants in Philadelphia’s beloved Reading Terminal Market, have a drive for combating hunger after they went on a trip to El Salvador where they fed the impoverished. As a part of their mission, the sale of every burger at Hunger Burger results in the equivalent of one meal being donated to hunger relief. Hunger Burger donates to three major organizations: King’s Castle Feeding Center in El Salvador, No Kid Hungry, and Philabundance.
Hunger Burger serves creative burgers, sides, and sauces, exotic and bold combinations, while serving a good cause to fight against hunger around the whole world.
