Maddie Hughes ’16: Music: As the weather finally gets warmer, and spring infects us with that necessary jolt of joy, we definitely need some new music to blast in the car with the windows down (finally)! Thankfully, spring is also bringing us some great new hits to sing loudly. The 1975, a British band that creates an amalgamation of indie pop and alternative music, has released a new album, i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. Quite a mouthful, but the songs on this album are a great follow-up to their debut from 2013. Songs on this album such as “The Sound” and “Love Me” will have you believing that summer is right around the corner. “She’s American” projects that 80’s vibe with an updated 21st century twist.
The 1975’s new album is not the only thing to look out for this season. Ex-One Direction member, Zayn Malik, will release his debut album, Mind of Mine, on March 25. Thanks to his recent singles, his fans have a preview of what to expect. A foray into R&B from a man who used to sing bubblegum pop tunes, this album gives us great insight into where Zayn’s true musical passion lies. With a radio hit like “Pillow Talk” and soulful crooning on “It’s You,” Zayn is sure to have people entranced by his new songs, even now removed from his world famous boyband.
Movie: Deadpool is a movie of many faces. While Ryan Reynolds literally has multiple faces throughout the movie, what I actually mean is that this movie is perfect for anyone. If you like comedies, you need to see this. If you like action, you need to see this. If you like romance, you need to see this. Deadpool is unlike any superhero movie you will ever see, and I mean that in a good way. As a fan of Ryan Reynolds—normally a star of hysterical romantic comedies such as The Proposal—it was great to see him in a role that still suited him but also allowed him to take comedy to another level. The witty script, rife with sarcasm, was fitting for this anti-superhero. The fourth wall breaks made this film especially unique. Though fourth wall breaks are not a new concept, Deadpool’s use of them makes the film so much more entertaining to the audience, as we feel personally invested in Wade Wilson, Deadpool’s human alter ego. The characterization of Wade Wilson himself is by far the coolest part of this movie. At the beginning of the film, Deadpool makes clear to us that he is not a nice guy. His motives are selfish—essentially, he is made really ugly by an operation that made him a mutant, and he seeks to “get back” his fiancée, whom he left before the operation. However, in order to get back his fiancée, he must find the man, Francis, who made him ugly, in order to reverse the horrible effects of his mutation. Such a vapid plot would normally not fly in the movie theater—however, it works here because of Ryan Reynolds’ charm as the no holds barred anti-hero and because of the wonderfully written script. If you’re ever in need of a quick pick-me-up, Deadpool is definitely the movie to see.
