The Dirties is one of the most clever film concepts I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Its a film about a two filmmakers who begins to make a film about death, and murder. This film suddenly turns into his reality as we see one of the characters decent into madness. Meanwhile the film we are watching is a film in the “found-footage” vein of paranormal activity. But where many of those films often use the tactic in order to save money, or to add an often unreal sense of reality to their film to make it seem as if were there, this film uses the technique to tell its story.

The film at its core is many things. It’s a love letter to film and film-making, with the characters often discussing their favorite films, and film-making techniques and you can see it’s influences throughout. However when influence si so clear it can often come off as cheap, a showing a lack of creativity. This film uses it influences to show how much it loves movies. However film itself turns out to be a destructive force as it ends up in the lead charcters destruction. Without giving to much away, the film their creating is about stopping the bullies that have critized the charcters, as well as their passion. When film turns into reality we see the two best friends pull apart, and soon become total strangers to one another.

It oozes similarites to the likes of Kevin Smith’s “Clerks,” Richard Linklater’s “Slaker,” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Pi.” It has the true independent filmaker spirit and creativity that is found in all three of these films. It has the witty dialouge of Clerks, the great characters and adventures of Slaker, and the decent into madness the is found in Pi. The film has statements on what someone will go through to protect their love, and stop anyone that gets in their way or puts them down. It puts down all bullies, and shows the evil side of a great underdog story. This love letter to film will leave you a film lover, and someone that will begin to chase their passions, and stop anybody that gets in the way of it. Or maybe everything I’m saying is wrong and you hate it your first watch and never want to see it again. Either way I highly recommend you watch this film. Thanks for reading and make sure to come back next week for another installation of Jackson’s obscure film of the week.
