Andrew Vetterlein ’15, Patrick Espe ’14:The boys’ squash team has won the National Championship four times in a row; however, winning their fifth this year might just be their biggest challenge to date. The team lost a strong senior class, including Tyler Odell ‘12, Bill Kacergis ‘12, and John Heil ’12, along with two younger varsity team members, Sean Hughes ‘15 and Clarke Doyle ‘15. The team also lost their head coach, Joe Russell.
However, Episcopal’s number two player, Andrew Stone ’14, assured, “The new coach, Brian Callahan, has done a very good job filling in for Coach Russell. He is very good at listening to the thoughts and concerns of his players.”
Patrick McCarthy ’13 doesn’t think that the loss of some strong players will have a detrimental effect on the team’s success, noting “We have a really solid group of seniors who have been a part of all four national championships so we know how to get the job done. If everyone focuses on the task at hand we shouldn’t have trouble producing a fifth national title, while going undefeated in the process.”
This confidence will most definitely help the team this season, although Doug Trimble ’13 did note that there are several “powerhouse” teams that pose a threat to Episcopal’s run for their fifth national title.
Trimble stated, “I think we have a good chance [at winning a fifth national title] although there are a lot of good teams coming to nationals such as Belmont Hill who will fight us tough.”
Facing such tough competition is nothing new for the Churchmen. In 2011, Episcopal beat Belmont Hill, the third seed team, 5-2 on their way to a national title. The previous year, EA beat Belmont Hill again, this time 6-1, on their run to another National Championship.
However, according to Stone, “Belmont Hill as definitely improved compared to previous years.”
The aforementioned impediments block the way between the boys’ squash team and their fifth consecutive national title. In spite of all of these adversities, the Churchmen still believe that they can come out of this season victorious.
Devin McLaughlin ’13 explained, “With what we’re doing both in practice and individually, I think that the group of guys we have this year is very capable of winning a fifth national title…We’ve definitely put in the work, so hopefully it will pay off for us.”
