Andrew Stone ’14, Jack Keffer’14: The Episcopal varsity girls’ soccer team is off to a great start this year, threatening to win the league title for the third time in four years. Behind the team’s success is workhorse Kaitlyn DiMarco ’13, Scholium’s November Athlete of the Month.
DiMarco has been involved with the sport since she was in kindergarten, and has since played for high-end club teams like FC Europa and FC Delco.
DiMarco, along with playing center back, a position that demands leadership and composure, is also one of the three senior captains this year for the Churchwomen. When asked about her position, DiMarco noted, “At center back, you can see the whole field and really direct the rest of the team.”
When asked about DiMarco, her coach, Celeste Melanson, replied, “She is a quiet leader, who leads the team by example both on and off the field. She is truly a force to be reckoned with in our defense. She is not only strong to stop opposing offensive players in their attack, but she is also skillful in dribbling the ball from the back line into our offensive end and is confident enough to even shoot the ball when given the chance.”
DiMarco has been on the team since her freshman year, so she knows her teammates and competition well. When asked about her favorite soccer memory the immediate response was “freshman year when we beat GA.”
“It was the second time we played them, and we tied them the first time,” explained DiMarco. “We beat them 2-0, and that was the first time that really anyone had beaten them since girls soccer started. That was probably the best game ever.” The girls’ soccer team won their first ever Inter-Ac title that year and even then, DiMarco was anchoring the defense.
DiMarco’s contributions to the team this year have been key to the team’s success. When asked about DiMarco’s role on the team, Madeleine Blommer ’14 said, “Kaitlyn is a great defender who motivates the whole team and keeps everyone focused and positive. She has stepped up this year and played an important vocal role in our defense. We could not ask for a better captain.”
Another of DiMarco’s teammates, Carli Grims ’14 added, “Kaitlyn has been our fearless leader this season. On and off the field, she has kept our team in line and focused.” DiMarco’s leadership, both vocally and by example, has played a large role in a team poised for an Inter-Ac title.
The Episcopal girls soccer team has, arguably, its’biggest game of the season coming soon when they play Agnes Irwin during EA/AIS Day. “It will definitely be a very competitive game,” said DiMarco, “Being EA/AIS day, Agnes Irwin always plays harder than they normally do so it will definitely be a good game.” However, DiMarco is still very confident that she and her teammates will come away with a win and hopefully an Inter-Ac title as well.
DiMarco plans on continuing to play soccer at the collegiate level when she graduates from Episcopal at the end of this year.
